''Shape of the Moon'' ( nl, Stand van de maan) is a 2004 Dutch/Indonesian documentary film directed by Leonard Retel Helmrich. The documentary was released on 24 November 2004 as the opening film of IDFA (International Documentary Festival Amsterdam). The documentary is the continuation of '' Eye of the Day'' and follows again the family Sjamsuddin, consisting of three generations living in the slums of Jakarta, Indonesia. Leonard Retel Helmrich
Leonard Retel Helmrich (16 August 1959 – 15 July 2023) was a Dutch cinematographer and film director. Born in Tilburg, he lived in Amsterdam since 1982. He received highest honours for international documentaries at the ''Sundance Festival'' and was the first two-time International Documentary winner at the ''International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam (IDFA)''. On June 5, 2018 he was rewarded by the Dutch King Willem-Alexander with the title Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. Helmrich was known for his work with the ' Single Shot Cinema' filming method. Biography After Indonesian independence the Helmrich family repatriated to the Netherlands during the Indo diaspora. The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is the world's largest documentary film festival held annually since 1988 in Amsterdam.
