Shaft Inc. (stylized as SHAFT; , Hepburn romanization, Hepburn: ), also known as Shaft Animation Studio, is a Japanese animation studio headquartered in Suginami, Tokyo, and founded in 1975. is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Chica Umino. It has been serialized in Hakusensha's manga magazine '' Young Animal'' since July 2007, with its chapters collected in 17 volumes as of August 2023. It follows the life of Rei Kiriyama, an introvert professional shogi player, who gradually develops both his play and his relationship with others. An anime television series adapted by Shaft aired on NHK G from October 2016 to March 2017 and a second season aired from October 2017 to March 2018, with each season consisting of 22 episodes. Toshimasa Suzuki
is a Japanese director, animator, and storyboard artist. He joined Shaft (company), Shaft in 1995 as an episode director and storyboard artist, and although he continues to work for Shaft, Suzuki commonly directs series with other studios, most notably with Xebec (studio), Xebec, where he made his series directorial debut with ''Heroic Age (TV series), Heroic Age'' in 2007. is a 1995 Japanese anime television series by Shaft. Plot The series takes place on the continent of Mugen, a floating island ruled by Princess Aura, who derives her power from the Great God Goal, but is forbidden from leaving the island. Mugen is located over an ocean and connected to the sky by the Novel Pole, which contains the Novel Worlds; worlds based on stories created by the human imagination, such as folk tales, fairy tales, and literature.
