Shadow Culture, Media And Sport Secretary
The shadow secretary of state for culture, media and sport (DCMS), previously the shadow secretary of state for national heritage and shadow secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, is a position in the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet. The shadow secretary of state is the opposite number to the secretary of state for culture, media and sport, holding them and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to account. They are the lead opposition spokesperson on culture, media and sport issues. The post was created in 1992 after John Major established the Department of National Heritage and secretary of state for national heritage. The National Heritage Department, and therefore the portfolio and title of the secretary of state and shadow secretary of state, was replaced by Culture, Media and Sport in 1997. Stuart James Andrew (born 25 November 1971) is a British Conservative Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Daventry in Northamptonshire since 2024. Timothy Stephen Kenneth Yeo (born 20 March 1945) is a British politician. A member of the Conservative Party, he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of South Suffolk between the 1983 United Kingdom general election and that of 2015, when he was deselected by his constituency party. Peter Michael Ainsworth (16 November 1956 – 6 April 2021) was a British Conservative politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for East Surrey from 1992 to 2010. John Major was Leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Opposition from 2 May 1997, following his defeat at the 1997 general election, until 19 June 1997, when William Hague was elected to succeed him. Following the defeat, Major announced his resignation as leader. But, for logistical reasons, a new leader could not be elected for several weeks. In the intervening period, Major appointed an interim Shadow Cabinet. The Shadow Cabinet was based on Major's final Cabinet.
