Seán Brosnan
Seán Brosnan (21 December 1916 – 18 April 1979) was an Irish barrister and Fianna Fáil politician. He served for 10 years in the Oireachtas, as a Teachta Dála (TD) and as a Seanad Éireann, senator. Brosnan was a native of Dingle, County Kerry. He was a prominent Gaelic footballer and won 3 All-Ireland medals with Kerry GAA, Kerry. In 1939, he was captain of the team but could not play in the final due to influenza. In 1933, he won an All-Ireland Minor Football Championship with Kerry GAA, Kerry. He won senior Kerry County Championship medals with Dingle GAA in 1938 and 1941. Seán Brosnahan (1911 – 9 December 1987) was an Irish Independent politician. He was a trade union official and general secretary of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation. Tom O'Connor (Gaelic Footballer)
Thomas O'Connor (3 November 1918 – 26 February 1997) was an Irish Gaelic footballer. At club level he played with Dingle GAA club and was an All-Ireland Championship-winning captain with the Kerry senior football team. Playing career Born in Dingle, O'Connor first enjoyed footballing success at provincial level as a student with Dingle CBS. He progressed to inter-county level as captain of the Kerry minor football team that lost to Louth in the 1936 All-Ireland final. O'Connor was a late addition to the Kerry senior team the following year and claimed his first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medal after coming on as a substitute in the replay defeat of Cavan. He claimed a second All-Ireland winners' medal as Kerry's team captain in the 1939 All-Ireland championship, the first of three successive final victories. Myra Barry
Myra Barry (born 30 June 1957) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1979 to 1987. A national school teacher by profession, she trained at St Patrick's College, Dublin. She was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael TD following a by-election in 1979 for the Cork North-East constituency, following the death of Fianna Fáil TD Seán Brosnan. It was one of two by-elections in County Cork on the same day, both of which Fianna Fáil lost. The double defeat in Jack Lynch's native county was a factor in Lynch's resignation on 5 December 1979 as Taoiseach and leader of Fianna Fáil. Her father Richard Barry was a sitting TD in the same constituency at the time of the by-election. The 1979 European Parliament election in Ireland was the Irish component of the 1979 European Parliament election. These were the first direct elections to the European Parliament, and the first election to be held simultaneously across the entire Island of Ireland since the 1921 Irish elections. The election was conducted under the single transferable vote. Despite the fact the election was held simultaneously across the entire Island of Ireland, Provisional Sinn Féin decided not to contest the election. However, the relative success of Bernadette McAliskey in Northern Ireland helped prompt Sinn Féin to stand in subsequent European elections. 1977 Irish General Election
The 1977 Irish general election to the 21st Dáil was held on Thursday, 16 June, following the dissolution of the 20th Dáil on 25 May by President Patrick Hillery on the request of Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave. The general election took place in 42 Dáil constituencies throughout Ireland for 148 seats in Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas, an increase of four seats with a significant revision of constituencies under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1974. The election is regarded as a pivotal point in twentieth-century Irish politics. Jack Lynch led Fianna Fáil to a landslide election win, clearly defeating the outgoing Fine Gael– Labour government.
