The Enemy Activities Investigation Service (SIAE) (Spanish: ''Servicio de Investigación de las Actividades Enemigas'') was a unit of the National Police of the Republic of Cuba during World War II dedicated to the investigation and hunting of Nazis, Abwehr agents, their allies in Spanish intelligence, and Imperial Japanese spies in the territory of Cuba. From 1940 to 1944, the head of the SIAE was Mariano Faget Diaz. SIAE became the Group for the Repression of Subversive Activities (GRAS), which was eventually merged into the Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities (BRAC). The Chief of the National Police of Cuba at this time was Manuel Benitez Valdés, who was sometimes confused to be the Director of the SIAE. Mariano Faget Diaz
Mariano Faget y Diaz was a Cuban secret police commander and counterintelligence officer for over twenty years in the Republic of Cuba. Faget was the director of the Enemy Activities Investigation Service (SIAE), where he was responsible for hunting Nazis and Abwehr agents in the Republic of Cuba during World War II. With the rise of the Cold War, Faget was made Director of the Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities (BRAC). He is regarded by many Cuban and American historians today as one of the most violent anticommunist police officers in Cuban history, but also its most shrewd and intelligent Nazi hunter. Bureau For The Repression Of Communist Activities
The Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities (, BRAC) was a secret police agency maintained by Cuban President Fulgencio Batista in the 1950s, which gained a reputation for brutality in its fight against the 26th of July Movement. The bureau was headed by former Nazi hunter Mariano Faget, who previously served as director of the counter-espionage unit Enemy Activities Investigation Service () from 1940 to 1944. On Dec. 7, 1955, BRAC agents fired upon an anti-Batista demonstration held by the Federation of University of Students in Havana. Manuel Benitez Valdés
Manuel Benítez y Valdés was the Chief of the national police of the Republic of Cuba (1902–1959), Republic of Cuba under President Fulgencio Batista. He has been described as a "...rough, tough General..." He would often carry out Batista's orders with ruthless efficiency. The Special Intelligence Service was a covert counterintelligence branch of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) located in South America during World War II. It was established to monitor the activities of Nazi and pro-Nazi groups in Central and South America. The organization was a forerunner to the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1934, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt became concerned about the activities of Nazi groups within the United States. Heinz Lüning
Heinz August Adolf Sirich Lüning (March 28, 1911 - November 10, 1942) was an espionage agent who spied for the Abwehr in Cuba during World War II and was later executed by Cuba. It is unclear whether Lüning was incompetent or if he was on a personal mission to sabotage the Nazi Germany, Nazi war effort in the Caribbean and Latin America, but the result is that his work as an Abwehr intelligence officer was described by the MI6, British Secret Services (MI6) as mediocre and subpar. The Cuban government at the time maintained that his incompetence was a ruse, and that the Cuban intelligence apparatus had captured a genuine master spy.
