September 2023 Armenian Coup Attempt Allegations
On September 24, 2023, the Armenian government announced that it had foiled an attempted coup by a militia during mass protests due to the 2023 Azerbaijani offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh. Background The Khachakirner militia had fought in Nagorno-Karabakh and in August 2023 it was reported their leader, Sarkis Poghosyan had met with the Armenian government and demanded arms and support for an operation to open the Lachin corridor, otherwise they would attempt to open it themselves. 2023 Armenian Protests
On 19 September 2023, a series of protests began in Armenia following a military offensive launched by Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, which resulted in a swift Azerbaijani victory over the ethnic Armenian breakaway republic of Artsakh. The republic had been heavily backed by Armenia until a change in Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's policy towards the region in recent years. The government of Azerbaijan compelled the separatist authorities in Artsakh to surrender, disband the Artsakh Defence Army and begin negotiations regarding their reintegration within Azerbaijan. Following an attempt to oust the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Garegin II by the Armenian government of Nikol Pashinyan, and further opposition reactions, on June 25, 2025, the National Security Service (NSS) announced that it had arrested Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, who led the 2024 Armenian protests, and 14 other opposition figures. On November 2, 2023, the Armenian government announced that it had foiled an attempted coup dubbed "Northern Leaflet drop" and the "National Salvation Uprising" by a group of anti-Government activists.
