Sentenced To Hang
Sentenced was a Finnish gothic metal band that played melodic death metal in their early years. The band formed in 1989 in the town of Muhos and broke up in 2005. Lead guitarist Miika Tenkula was the band's vocalist for the first album, but duties were shifted to bassist Taneli Jarva for the next two albums, ''North from Here'' and Amok (Sentenced album), ''Amok'', until his departure in 1995. Under new lead vocalist Ville Laihiala, Sentenced shifted from melodic death metal to gothic metal and enjoyed a run of commercial success in Finland, including three consecutive number-one albums. The band announced in 2005 that their eighth album ''The Funeral Album'' would be their last. The single "Ever-Frost" spent six weeks at number one in Finland and Sentenced's final show took place on 1 October in their hometown Oulu. Tenkula died of a heart attack in 2009. Taneli Jarva
Taneli Jarva is a Finnish musician. He was the vocalist and bass player of the heavy metal band Sentenced from 1991 until leaving the group in 1995, citing creative differences. In 1998, Jarva formed The Black League, which he considers his "brainchild and life's work". The Black League published five studio albums. The band was active until October 2014, when Jarva decided to call it quits due to "loss of personal inspiration". Tiamat is a Swedish metal band that formed in Stockholm in 1987 and led by Johan Edlund. The band went through a number of stylistic changes in their earlier releases before settling on gothic metal. History Initially, the band had the name Treblinka and a style of black metal, black/death metal. History Spinefarm Records began as a mailorder distribution company, founded by Riku Pääkkönen. ''Shadows of the Past'' is the debut album by the Finnish metal band Sentenced. It was released in 1991 and reissued by Century Media in 1995, including the ''Journey to Pohjola'' demo. It was reissued again in 2001 with ''North from Here'' and again in 2008 as a two-CD set along with their first two demos. ''Shadows of the Past'' features more prominent death metal elements than would be present later in their career. On the introduction speech of ''North from Here'' 2008 re-release, Jarva states that at the time of ''Shadows of the Past'' the band was just a "Death clone" amongst others, so the band chose to pursue a more technical and personal-sounding direction on their second album.
