Semigallia (Saeima Constituency)
Semigallia (; ) is one of the five multi-member constituency, constituencies of the Saeima, the national legislature of Latvia. The constituency was established in 1922 when the Saeima was established following Latvia's Latvian War of Independence, independence from the Soviet Union. It consists of the city of Jelgava and Municipalities of Latvia, municipalities of Aizkraukle Municipality, Aizkraukle, Bauska Municipality, Bauska, Dobele Municipality, Dobele, Jēkabpils Municipality, Jēkabpils, Jelgava Municipality, Jelgava and Tukums Municipality, Tukums in the Cultural regions of Latvia, region of Semigallia. The constituency currently elects 13 of the 100 members of the Saeima using the Open list, open party-list proportional representation electoral system. Saeima
The Saeima () is the parliament of the Latvia, Republic of Latvia. It is a unicameral parliament consisting of 100 members who are elected by proportional representation, with seats allocated to political parties which gain at least 5% of the popular vote. Elections are scheduled to be held once every four years, normally on the first Saturday of October. The most recent elections were held in 2022 Latvian parliamentary election, October 2022. The President of Latvia can dismiss the Saeima and request early elections. The Parliamentary dissolution power of Latvian President, procedure for dismissing it involves substantial political risk to the president, including a risk of loss of office. The Progressives (Latvia)
The Progressives ( , PRO) is a social-democratic and green political party in Latvia. The party was founded on 25 February 2017. Since 4 September 2021 its leaders have been Antoņina Ņenaševa and Atis Švinka. The Progressives have 11 seats on Riga City Council and 10 seats in the Saeima and one seat in the European Parliament. It is currently a junior partner in the Siliņa cabinet with three ministers. History The party is a successor of a social-democratic NGO of the same name () that was founded on 26 March 2011 and was led by Ansis Dobelis. Edvīns Šnore
Edvīns Šnore (born 21 March 1974, in Saulkrasti) is a Latvian film director and politician. He was elected to a four-year term in the Latvian Saeima in 2014 and 2018. Biography Šnore's family comes from Kuldīga. He went to high school in Riga. During the Revolutions of 1989 he sympathized with the Popular Front of Latvia. He first studied political science in Norway, and then earned his master's degree at the University of Latvia. In 2013 he completed his Doctoral thesis on the Western European view of Holodomor. Šnore has become known for his 2008 documentary '' The Soviet Story''. For this film, he was awarded with the Latvian Order of the Three Stars in 2008, and the Estonian Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana in 2009.
