Sector, West Virginia
Sector is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Hampshire County, West Virginia, Hampshire County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is located along the west bank of the Potomac River#South Branch Potomac River, South Branch Potomac River on Fleming-Sector Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 8/3) across the river from the community of Glebe, West Virginia, Glebe. Sector grew as a result of its operation of a post office and Train station, station on the South Branch Valley Railroad in the early 20th century. On the railroad, it was known as Glebe Station because of its proximity to Glebe. A suspension bridge once connected the two communities via Fleming-Sector Road, but this was repeatedly demolished by a succession of serious floods, most recently in the late 1930s or early 1940s after which it was not rebuilt. James White (author)
James White (7 April 1928 – 23 August 1999) was a Northern Irish author of science fiction novellas, short stories and novels. He was born in Belfast and returned there after spending some early years in Canada. After a few years working in the clothing industry, he worked at Short Brothers Ltd., an aircraft company based in Belfast, from 1965 until taking early retirement in 1984 as a result of diabetes. White married Margaret Sarah Martin, another science fiction fan, in 1955 and the couple had three children. He died of a stroke. He became a fan of science fiction in 1941 and co-wrote two fan magazines, from 1948 to 1953 and 1952 to 1965. Encouraged by other fans, White began publishing short stories in 1953, and his first novel was published in 1957. His best-known novels were the twelve of the Sector General series, the first published in 1962 and the last after his death. ''Sector General'' is a series of twelve science fiction novels and various short stories (1957–1999) by the Northern Irish author James White. The series derives its name from the setting of the majority of the books, the Sector 12 General Hospital, a huge hospital space station located in deep space, designed to treat a wide variety of life forms with a wide range of ailments and life-support requirements, and to house an equally diverse staff. The Hospital was founded to promote peace after humanity's first interstellar war, and in the fourth book the authorities conclude that its emergency services are the most effective way to make peaceful contact with new species. A Sector is a shore-based operational unit of the United States Coast Guard. Sector Light
A sector light is a man-made pilotage and position fixing aid that consists of strictly delineated horizontal angle light beams to guide water-borne traffic through a safe channel at night in reasonable visibility. Sector lights are most often used for safe passage through shallow or dangerous waters. This may be when leaving or entering harbour. Nautical charts (paper and electronic) give all the required information. Sectors of colored glass (or plastic) are placed in the lanterns of these lights. The light will then show these colors when observed certain bearings. Bearings referring to a sector are given in degrees true, as observed from sea. Though the colors of the light will change, the characteristics will not. The change of color is not abrupt. The transition is made through an arc of uncertainty of 2° or greater.
