Wolf Rilla
Wolf Peter Rilla (16 March 1920 – 19 October 2005) was a film director and writer of German background, who worked mainly in the United Kingdom. Rilla is known for directing '' Village of the Damned'' (1960). He wrote many books for students, such as ''The Writer and the Screen: On Writing for Film and Television'' and ''The A to Z of Movie Making''. Early life and career Rilla was born in Berlin, where his father Walter Rilla was an actor and producer. (Originally published in the ''Reference Guide to British and Irish Film Directors'' In common with many others in entertainment and the arts, Walter’s family recognised the dangers when Hitler came to power, and moved to London in 1934 when Wolf was 14.) Johnny Briggs (actor)
John Ernest Briggs (5 September 1935 – 28 February 2021) was an English actor. He was known for his role as Mike Baldwin in the soap opera ''Coronation Street'', in which he appeared from 1976 to 2006. Early life Briggs was born in Battersea, south-west London, on 5 September 1935. His father was a master carpenter. He was evacuated from London during the Blitz campaign of World War II. He was awarded a scholarship to train at the Italia Conti Academy stage school when he was 12 years old. There, he learned alongside Millicent Martin, Nanette Newman and Anthony Newley. Career One of Briggs' first acting roles was in '' Quartet'' (1948), alongside George Cole. Briggs also worked as a stagehand at the Windmill Theatre, before completing two years of national service with the Royal Tank Regiment in Germany. ''Village of the Damned'' is a 1960 science fiction horror film by Anglo-German director Wolf Rilla. The film is adapted from the novel '' The Midwich Cuckoos'' (1957) by John Wyndham. The lead role of Professor Gordon Zellaby is played by George Sanders. A sequel, '' Children of the Damned'' (1964), followed, as did a remake, also called '' Village of the Damned'' (1995). Plot In the British village of Midwich, Professor Gordon Zellaby is talking to his brother-in-law, Major Alan Bernard, on the telephone when he, his wife Anthea, and all the other villagers suddenly fall unconscious, as do the animals and other people entering the village. Bernard Spear (11 September 1919 – 9 May 2003) was an English actor. Early life Spear was born on 11 September 1919 in Croydon, Surrey, to a Polish-Jewish father and a Russian-Jewish mother. He was educated at Central Federation School in London, and worked as a clerk at a tobacco manufacturers before serving in the Royal Artillery in Gibraltar during World War II.
