Secretary-General Of The Council Of The European Union
The secretary-general of the Council of the European Union heads the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union. In October 2022, the Council appointed Thérèse Blanchet as the Secretary-General of the Council for a five-year term, from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2027. Previously, the post holder was also the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, President of the European Defence Agency and the Western European Union. The Treaty of Amsterdam, which entered into force in 1999, created the office of the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and specified that the Secretary-General would occupy that position simultaneously. Javier Solana exercised both functions from 1999 until 2009. The Lisbon Treaty, which took effect on 1 December 2009, redefined the post of High Representative and again separated it from the office of Secretary-General of the Council. The Council of the European Union, often referred to in the treaties and other official documents simply as the Council, and less formally known as the Council of Ministers, is the third of the seven institutions of the European Union (EU) as listed in the Treaty on European Union. It is one of two legislative bodies and together with the European Parliament serves to amend and approve, or veto, the proposals of the European Commission, which holds the right of initiative. Christian Calmes
Christian Calmes (11 July 1913 – 5 July 1995) was a Luxembourgish civil servant, lawyer, and historian. He served as Secretary-General of the precursor to the Council of the European Union from its inception as part of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952 until 1973. He attended the Lycée classique in Echternach, before studying law in Strasbourg and Paris. In 1940, as a sign of protest against the Nazi occupation of Luxembourg he closed his legal firm, and became a manual labourer in Karelshaff near Colmar-Berg. As a member of the Resistance, he was imprisoned in October 1943 in the Grund, and was later interned in Hinzert concentration camp for 18 months. After escaping in March 1945, he hid until the end of the war. Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen
Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen (born 30 October 1962) is a Danish diplomat who has served as Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union from 2015 to 2022. Early life and education Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen was born on 30 October 1962 in Aden, Colony of Aden (now Yemen). His father was a Lutheran missionary and his mother was a teacher. After the outbreak of the North Yemen Civil War, the family returned to Denmark. They settled in North Jutland, where Tranholm-Mikkelsen grew up in Denmark in a progressive, liberal family. Tranholm-Mikkelsen started his education in a Protestant school, then earned a Master of Science in 1990 in international relations from the London School of Economics. Uwe Corsepius
Uwe Corsepius (born 9 August 1960) is a German diplomat, and former Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union. He was succeeded by Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen. Early life and education Uwe Corsepius was born in Berlin, Germany. In 1984 he earned a degree in economics from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He is regarded as a disciple of the economist Horst Steinmann. He earned his doctorate at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy ( Institut für Weltwirtschaft). Francisco Javier Solana de Madariaga CYC (; born 14 July 1942) is a Spanish physicist and PSOE politician. Jürgen Trumpf (8 July 1931 – 13 May 2023) was a German diplomat and politician. He was appointed Secretary-General for the Council of the European Union and held the office from 1 September 1994 to 17 October 1999. When the Amsterdam Treaty came into force, he briefly became the first High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy but a month later made way for Javier Solana at the Cologne European Summit. The General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union (GSC), also known as Council Secretariat, assists the Council of the European Union, the presidency of the Council of the European Union, the European Council and the president of the European Council. The General Secretariat is headed by the secretary-general of the Council of the European Union. The Secretariat is divided into eight directorates-general, each administered by a director-general. Other two departments are administered by deputy directors-general. The Secretariat is based in Brussels, in the Europa building and the Justus Lipsius building.
