Second Line (ice Hockey)
In ice hockey, a line is a group of forwards that play in a group, or "shift", during a game. A complete forward line consists of a left wing, a center, and a right wing, while a pair of defensemen who play together are called "partners." Typically, an NHL team dresses twelve forwards along four lines and three pairs of defensemen, though some teams elect to dress a seventh defenseman, or a thirteenth forward. In ice hockey, players are substituted "on the fly," meaning a substitution can occur even in the middle of play as long as proper protocol is followed (under typical ice hockey rules, the substituting player cannot enter the ice until the substituted player is within a short distance of the bench and not actively playing the puck); substitutions can still be made during stoppages. Usually, coordinated groups of players (called linemates) are substituted simultaneously in what are called line changes. Linemates may change throughout the game at the coach's say. Ice hockey is ...

Second Line (parades)
The second line is a tradition in parades organized by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs (SAPCs) with brass band parades in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The "main line" or "first line" is the main section of the parade, or the members of the SAPC with the parading permit as well as the brass band. The second line consists of people who follow the band to enjoy the music, dance, and engage in community. The second line's style of traditional dance, in which participants dance and walk along with the SAPCs in a free-form style with parasols and handkerchiefs, is called "second-lining". It is one of the most foundationally Black American-retentive cultures in the United States. It has been called "the quintessential New Orleans art form – a jazz funeral without a body". Another significant difference from jazz funerals is that second line parades lack the slow hymns and dirges played at funerals (although some organizations may have the band play a solemn selection towar ...

The Second Line
''The Second Line'' (1950–present) is the official magazine of the New Orleans Jazz Club. Formed in April 1950, the magazine is dedicated to jazz musicians, teachers, and enthusiasts who have attempted to preserve New Orleans jazz music from commercialization. Its name is a reference to the practice of the second line. History ''The Second Line'' was the publication of the New Orleans Jazz Club, founded by four white friends in 1948, during the annual Zulu parade at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Attracting musicians and record collectors alike, the club was dedicated to documenting and preserving jazz music from the New Orleans area. Despite the fact that jazz was a predominantly black art form in the 1940s and 1950s, during this time the club did not admit African American members, except as out-of-town correspondents, for fear of tarnishing its image. Members of the club were encouraged to attend regular meetings and jam sessions, listen to the radio station created by founding ...
