Sebastián Miguel
Sebastián Miguel (7 February 1931 – 15 July 2006) was a Spanish professional golfer. Miguel was born in Madrid. He won several major tournaments around Europe during the 1950s and 60s, including the Spanish Open in 1954, 1960 and 1967 and the Portuguese Open in 1959. He also won the Spanish Professionals Championship four times. Miguel represented his country in the World Cup on eleven occasions. He finished in runners-up spot in the team event twice, in 1958 partnered by his brother Ángel, who also had a successful professional career, and again in 1963 partnered by Ramón Sota. Miguel performed well in The Open Championship, finishing in the top ten four times, with a best of tied for 6th place in 1967. In the 1961 Open he tied for 14th alongside his brother. He also played in the U.S. Masters three times, but never made the cut. 1956 Canada Cup
The 1956 Canada Cup took place 24–26 June on the West Course at the Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England. It was the fourth Canada Cup event, which became the World Cup in 1967. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 29 teams. The Scandinavian team that had competed in 1954 and 1955 was replaced by teams from Denmark and Sweden, while there were new teams from Chinese Taipei, Portugal and South Korea. Each team consisted of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. 18 holes were played on the first two days with 36 holes played on the final day. Because of the time taken to play each round, a cut was introduced after the second day, with only the leading 20 teams competing on the final day. An 18-hole consolation event was held for the remaining 9 teams. There was provision for an individual in one of these 9 teams to complete the 72 holes if they were well-placed after the second day. Joy Cup
The Joy Cup was an annual men's professional team golf competition between teams representing the British Isles and the Rest of Europe. It was played from 1954 to 1958. The British Isles won all four contests that were played. The trophy was provided by the Jean Patou company and named after Joy perfume that they produced. The concept of a match between Great Britain/Ireland and Continental Europe was revived with the Hennessy Cognac Cup in 1974. Format The cup was contested over two days with 36-hole foursomes on the first day and 36-hole singles matches on the second day. Generally there were 5 foursomes and 10 singles except that in 1956 there were only 4 foursomes and 8 singles. It was the 16th World Cup (men's golf), World Cup event, which was named the Canada Cup until 1966 and changed its name to the World Cup (men's golf), World Cup in 1967. The third round on Saturday was interrupted by hail and rain storm, with six teams still on the course and play was resumed early Sunday. Each team consisted of two players from a country.
