Scout Promise
The Scout Promise (or Oath) is a declaration made by a person joining the Scout movement. Since the publication of ''Scouting for Boys'' in 1908, all Scouts and Girl Guides around the world have taken a Scout (or Guide) promise or oath to live up to ideals of the movement, and subscribed to a Scout Law. The wording of the Scout Promise and Scout Law have varied slightly over time and from country to country. Although most Scouting and Guiding organizations use the word "promise", a few, such as the Boy Scouts of America, tend to use "oath" instead. Typically, Scouts and Guides will make the three-fingered salute when reciting the promise. The Israel Boy and Girl Scouts Federation (, ''Hit'ahdut HaTzofim VeHaTzofot BeYisrael'') is Israel's federation of the five Scouting organizations in Israel, sorted by religious affiliation. Oaths
Traditionally, an oath (from Anglo-Saxon ', also a plight) is a statement of fact or a promise taken by a sacrality as a sign of verity. A common legal substitute for those who object to making sacred oaths is to give an affirmation instead. Nowadays, even when there is no notion of sanctity involved, certain promises said out loud in ceremonial or juridical purpose are referred to as oaths. "To swear" is a verb used to describe the taking of an oath; to make a solemn vow. Religion In Scouting
Religion in Scouting and the Girl Guides is an element of the Scout method. It has been given different interpretations and practiced differently by different Scout organizations over the years. The Scout Movement is separate to any particular faith or religion but the Scout Promise holds to spirituality and a belief in a god, higher power. Increasing secularism and religious Multiculturalism, diversity has caused misunderstandings and controversies in some of Scout organizations. Traditional Scouting is "old-fashioned" or "back to basics" Scouting in some form, often with an emphasis on woodcraft and scoutcraft activities.
