Scotland At The 2006 Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland announced on 3 November 2005 that Scotland would be sending 166 athletes (104 men and 62 women) to compete in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, supported by 70 officials. This is a smaller team than the country fielded at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, when Scotland sent 207 athletes and 85 officials, winning 6 Gold, 8 Silver and 16 Bronze medals. The main team's departure was on 28 February 2006 from Glasgow Airport flying with Emirates Airlines, one of the team's main sponsors. Other sources of financial support are the Clydesdale Bank, sportscotland, the Commonwealth Games Endowment fund, and the Scottish general public. Scotland had been adversely affected by the withdrawal of judo from the 2006 programme, where it had won many medals in previous games. A commonwealth is a traditional English term for a political community founded for the common good. The noun "commonwealth", meaning "public welfare, general good or advantage", dates from the 15th century. Kenneth Anderson (boxer)
Kenneth John W. "Kenny" Anderson (born 5 January 1983) is a Scottish former professional boxer who competed from 2006 to 2012. At regional level, he held the Celtic super middleweight title in 2009 and the British super middleweight title in 2012. As an amateur he won a gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in the light-heavyweight division. Caitlin McClatchey
Caitlin McClatchey (born 28 November 1985) is a British former swimmer. Representing Scotland, she won two gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, in the 200 metres freestyle and 400 metres freestyle. Representing Great Britain, she won bronze medals in the 400 m freestyle at the 2005 World Championships and 2006 European Championships. She has also competed at three Olympic Games and reached the Olympic 200 m freestyle final in 2008 and 2012. She is a former British record holder in the 100 m, 200 m and 400 m Freestyle. She graduated with a politics degree from Loughborough University in 2011. David Carry
David Robert Carry (born 8 October 1981) is a Scottish former competition swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympics, FINA world championships and the European championships, and Scotland in the Commonwealth Games. He competed internationally in freestyle and medley swimming events. He is the winner of seven medals in major international championships. He is of Scottish- Faroese ancestry. Sheena Sharp
Sheena Sharp (born 13 April 1953) is a British sport shooter. Career Sharp started first shooting at the age of 11 before stopping at 16. Picking up the sport again over 20 years later, she progressed quickly and soon earn selection first with the Scottish and then the Great Britain team. Attending her first Commonwealth Games in 2002, she won silver in the 50 m rifle prone pairs partnering with Susan Jackson. Paul James Foster (born 13 March 1973) is a multiple world bowls champion who lives in Troon, Scotland. He plays at Troon Portland (Outdoor) & Ambassador Prestwick (Indoor) bowling clubs. Alex "Tattie" Marshall (born 8 February 1967) is a record-breaking Scottish bowls player. Career Marshall plays at Gifford Bowls Club (outdoor) and East Lothian Indoor Bowling Club. Marshall began bowling at the age of eight supported by both his father and grandfather and first represented his country in 1988. He is a record breaking six-time World Indoor Singles Champion. He has eight World Indoor Pairs titles to his credit (six Open Pairs and two Mixed Pairs). Craig MacLean MBE (Grantown-on-Spey, July 31, 1971) is a Scottish track cyclist who represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, winning a silver medal in the Team Sprint at the 2000 Olympics.
