Scotiabank Photography Award
The Scotiabank Photography Award is a annual Canadian photography award. Two runners-up each receive . In addition to the cash prize, the prize consists of a solo-exhibition of their work and the publication of a book about the work. It is intended to support a Canadian mid-to-late career lens-based artists, aiming to take that career to a higher level of national and international recognition. Edward Burtynsky
Edward Burtynsky (born February 22, 1955) is a Canadian photographer and artist known for his large format photographs of industrial landscapes. His works depict locations from around the world that represent the increasing development of industrialization and its impacts on nature and the human existence. It is most often connected to the philosophical concept of the sublime, a trait established by the grand scale of the work he creates, though they are equally disturbing in the way they reveal the context of rapid industrialization. Burtynsky is the inaugural winner of the TED Prize for Innovation and Global Thinking in 2005. In 2016 he was the receiver of the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts for his collection of works thus far. Arnaud Maggs (May 5, 1926 – November 17, 2012) was a Canadian artist and photographer. Born in Montreal, Maggs is best known for stark portraits arranged in grid-like arrangements, which illustrate his interest in systems of identification and classification. After training and working as a graphic designer, Maggs turned to commercial photography in the 1960s. Beginning in 1967, he produced editorial fashion mages and portraiture for several Canadian magazines such as ''Maclean's, Chatelaine (magazine), Chatelaine'', ''Saturday Night (magazine), Saturday Night'', ''Canadian Business'', and ''Toronto Life.'' Stan Douglas (born October 11, 1960) is an artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Douglas' film and video installations, photography and work in television frequently touch on the history of literature, cinema and music, while examining the "failed utopia" of modernism and obsolete technologies. Mark Ruwedel (born June 11, 1954) is an American landscape photographer and educator. His books include ''Westward the Course of Empire,'' depicting the remains of abandoned railway lines in the landscape of the western United States and Canada; and ''Message from the Exterior,'' abandoned and decaying houses in desert communities around Los Angeles. Angela Grauerholz
Angela Grauerholz D.F.A. (born January 10, 1952) is a German-born Canadian photographer, graphic designer and educator living in Montreal. Biography Grauerholz was born in Hamburg and completed studies in graphic design at the Kunstschule Alsterdamm there and studied literature and linguistics at the University of Hamburg. She came to Canada in 1976 and, with the help of a grant from the Canada Council, completed a MFA degree in photography at Concordia University. During the 1980s, she operated a graphic design studio, working on magazines, catalogues and books.
