Schortens
Schortens is a town in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony, Germany. Division of the town The town currently consists of the following districts: Schortens, Heidmühle, Grafschaft, Accum, Sillenstede, Schoost, Roffhausen, Middelsfähr, Addernhausen, Oestringfelde, Ostiem and Upjever. History Graves discovered during excavations in the 1970s indicate the existence of an early human settlement in the area of Schortens already during the 5th century. In 1158 Schortens was first mentioned as "Scrotinh" in a document of Pope Adrian IV. Later the name changed to "Scrotinghe". In 1400 the place was called "Schortense". The St. Stephan Church in Schortens was built shortly after 1153 as a result of a victory of the Östringer against a superior army. In the Middle Ages, the monastery of Oestringfelde, which was also used as an asylum, was well known for its horse breeding. Jever
Jever () is the capital of the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony, Germany. The name Jever is usually associated with a major brand of beer, Jever Pilsener, which is produced there. The city is also a popular holiday resort. Jever was granted city status in 1536. Unofficially Jever is sometimes referred to as ''Marienstadt'' (Maria city) in reference to Maria of Jever, the last independent ruler of the city. The inhabitants of Jever are named ''Jeveraner'' ("Jeverans"). Politics City Council The Jever City Council consists of 30 members—the fixed number for a town with a population of between 12,001 and 15,000 inhabitants. The 30 councillors are elected by local elections for a five-year term. The current term of office began on 1 November 2016 and ends on 31 October 2021. Friesland (district)
Friesland is a district (''Landkreis'') in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the southeast and clockwise) the districts of Wesermarsch, Ammerland, Leer and Wittmund, and by the North Sea. The city of Wilhelmshaven is enclosed by—but not part of—the district. History The Frisian region was ruled by local chieftains until the 15th century; see East Frisia for details. In 1438 in the northern part of today's Landkreis Friesland the Lordship of Jever was founded. East Frisia was from then on regarded as a hostile territory, and many skirmishes between Jever and East Frisia took place during the 15th and 16th centuries. The last ruler of Jever was Mary of Jever, who ruled until 1575. After her death Jever became a part of Oldenburg, but East Frisia made a claim for the territory as well. Jever Air Base
Jever Air Base is a former German Air Force military air base, located 4.3 km west-southwest of Schortens in Lower Saxony, Germany. It was the home of parts of the German Air Force Regiment. Military flying ceased in September 2013. History The airfield was originally opened in 1936 for the Luftwaffe. It was seized during World War II by the British Army in April 1945 and taken over by the Royal Air Force (RAF). It was designated as Advanced Landing Ground B-117 Jever. It was later designated RAF Jever and used by the RAF beginning in 1952 as part of the Cold War British Forces in West Germany.
