Schmidt's Sausage Haus
Schmidt's Sausage Haus und Restaurant is a German restaurant in the German Village neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The business, in operation since 1886, is a contributing part of the German Village historic district, on the local and national registers of historic properties. History Schmidt's first operated as the J. Fred Schmidt Meat Packing House, opened in 1886. In 1914, Schmidt's first operated a food stand at the Ohio State Fair, and returns to the fair each year. The business is the oldest concession stand at the state fair. In 1965, J. Fred Schmidt's grandson George F. Schmidt closed the meatpacking plant. He opened the Schmidt's restaurant two years later nearby the original building, which has since been demolished and replaced with apartments. German Village
German Village is a historic neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio, just south of the city's downtown. It was settled in the early-to-mid-19th century by a large number of German immigrants, who at one time comprised as much as a third of the city's entire population. It became a city historic district in 1960 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, becoming the list's largest privately funded preservation district, and in 2007, was made a Preserve America Community by the federal government. In 1980, its boundaries increased, and today it is one of the world's premier historic restorations. The Ohio State Fair is one of the largest state fairs in the United States, held in Columbus, Ohio during late July through early August. As estimated in a 2011 economic impact study conducted by Saperstein & Associates; the State Fair contributes approximately 68.5 million United States dollar, dollars to the state's economy. In 2023, attendance was 1,006,228, the Fair's highest 12-day attendance on record. Its first issue was published on July 1, 1871, and it has been the only mainstream daily newspaper in the city since '' The Columbus Citizen-Journal'' ceased publication in 1985.
