Scapa Flow viewed from its eastern end in June 2009 Scapa Flow (; ) is a body of water in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, sheltered by the islands of Mainland, Graemsay, Burray,S. C. George, ''Jutland to Junkyard'', 1973. South Ronaldsay and Hoy. Its sheltered waters have played an important role in travel, trade and conflict throughout the centuries. Vikings anchored their longships in Scapa Flow more than a thousand years ago. It was the United Kingdom's chief naval base during the First and Second World Wars, but the facility was closed in 1956. Scapa Flow has a shallow sandy bottom not deeper than and most of it is about deep; it is one of the great natural harbours and anchorages of the world, with sufficient space to hold a number of navies. The harbour has an area of and contains just under 1 billion cubic metres of water. Scapa Flow (band)
Scapa Flow was a Swedish EBM band, formed in 1988, and was one of the icons of the new EBM and synth scene that emerged in Sweden in the late 80's. The band was named after Scapa Flow, a body of water in the Orkney Islands. History Scapa Flow formed in May 1988 as a quartet of Andreas Carlsson, Johan Lavsund, Johan Nygren and Carl Sjöström. The band was one of several electronic music groups to emerge from Uppsala in the 1980s including Cultivated Bimbo, Inside Treatment, and Systema. Their first demo tape, ''The Core'', was recorded that year. The band made contact with Swedish label Front Music Production, who selected the track "Servant" for their compilation release ''Trans Europa (A Swiss - Swedish Techno-Compilation)''. The band recorded a second demo cassette entitled ''Crucial Impact'' towards the end of the same year. Scapa Flow (film)
''Scapa Flow'' is a 1930 German drama film directed by Leo Lasko and starring Otto Gebühr, Claire Rommer and Claus Clausen. It is set around the Wilhelmshaven Mutiny and the Scuttling of the German fleet in Scapa Flow at the close of the First World War. In Weimar Germany the scuttling of the fleet in defiance of the victorious Allies had come to be seen as a popular patriotic act. The inclusion of the Mutiny, however, was more controversial as it highlighted the political divisions which continued to exist. The film was praised by the right wing press, and comparisons were made to the Russian film ''Battleship Potemkin''. Scapa Flow (1924–1928) was an American Thoroughbred race horse, a son of Man o' War. He first came to prominence in 1926 after winning the 43rd running of the United States Hotel Stakes as a two-year-old. He was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords, who bred him. In August 1926, Morton Schwartz offered $100,000 to purchase Scapa Flow, but his owners refused to sell him at any price. Career With Frank Coltiletti as his jockey, Scapa Flow won the U.S. Hotel Stakes in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1:14 2/5. THe earned $11,525 for his owners at the Union Avenue course. Coming out of the gate, Coltiletti had the advantage of a step with Scapa Flow, who came to the front quickly. Pharos (horse)
Pharos (4 April 1920 – 30 April 1937) was a British bred thoroughbred racehorse and a leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland. Pedigree Bred and raced by Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby, he was a brother to the stakeswinners, Fair Isle (1927) and Fairway (1925) who won 31 races and £71,635 between them. They were by the successful sire, Phalaris, their dam the staying mare, Scapa Flow by Chaucer. Pharos's maximum distance was approximately 1¼ miles and Fairway could stay much further and was altogether a better racehorse. Both Pharos and Fairway were outstanding successes at stud where they both sired classic winners of a high standard. However, Pharos has proved the more influential in the long run and now stands four-square on the pre-eminent sire line in world racing..
