Scanlon, Minnesota
Scanlon is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 991 at the 2010 census. Interstate 35 and Carlton County Highway 45 (CR 45) are two of the main routes in Scanlon. Other main routes include Washington Avenue (CR 16) and County Road 61 (CR 61). Scanlon is located immediately east of the city of Cloquet; and 18 miles southwest of the city of Duluth. History A post office called Scanlon was established in 1901, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1954. The city was named for Joseph Scanlon, a businessperson in the lumber industry. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land. Scanlon Farm
Scanlon Farm (also known as the Scanlon Log House) is a late 19th-century loghouse and farm overlooking Three Churches Run east of the unincorporated community of Three Churches, West Virginia. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 3, 1988. Architecture Exterior The farm's main structure is the Scanlon Log House, a two-story log structure built around 1840 by the Larimore family and acquired by the Scanlon family in the 1860s. It is a folk house of the Midland tradition, in the early German settlement era pattern. The house is one room deep and linear in design with external chimneys on both gable ends of the house. The logs in its construction are squared, hand-hewn, and laid horizontally, notched on the ends, and with narrow chinking. (Chinking refers to the mortar between the logs). The Scanlon plan is a gainsharing program which combines leadership, total workforce education, and widespread employee participation with a reward system linked to organization performance. It has been used by a variety of public and private companies with varying amounts of success. Origin The first Scanlon plan was instituted by Joseph N. Scanlon (1897–1956) a steelworker, cost accountant, professional boxer, local union president, Acting Director of the Steelworkers Research Department, and Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As the local union president of the steel mill in which he was employed, he witnessed the depressed economy of the 1930s. His co-workers wanted increased wages, his company had barely survived the depression. He was advised by the Steelworkers International to see if he could harness the energy and talents of the workers to save the company.
