	Saumarez Smith William Saumarez Smith (known as Saumarez; K. J. Life Smith was born in Saint Helier, Jersey the eldest twin son of the Lieutenant Richard Snowden Smith (later a clergyman) and his wife Anne, ''née'' Robin. Smith was educated at Windlesham House School, Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. with first-class honours in classics and theology in 1858. He was Crosse theological scholar in 1859, Tyrwhitt Hebrew scholar in 1860, and on two occasions won the Seatonian prize for poetry. He graduated M.A. in 1862, B.D. in 1871, D.D. in 1889, and was a fellow of Trinity College, 1860-70. 	Charles Saumarez Smith Sir Charles Robert Saumarez Smith (born 28 May 1954) is a British cultural historian specialising in the history of art, design and architecture. He was the Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts in London from 2007 until he stepped down in 2018. He was replaced by Axel Rϋger, who took up the position in 2019. He was previously director of the National Portrait Gallery from 1994 to 2002 and director of the National Gallery from 2002 to 2007. He has published various articles and books, including ''The Company of Artists:The Origins of the Royal Academy of Arts in London'' and was a judge at the World Architecture Festival 2014 in Singapore and the Young Masters 2014 awards in London.
