Sathi (1938 Film)
''Saathi'' (English: ''The Companion'') is a 1938 Indian Bengali film directed by Phani Majumdar and produced by New Theatres. It was the Bengali version of '' Street Singer'' and the film was the debut of Phani Majumdar as a director. The film's cast includes K. L. Saigal, Kanan Devi, Boken Chatto, Amar Mullick, Sailen Chowdhury, and Shyam Laha. The story involves two young street children growing up together, singing in the streets and hoping to make it big in the show world. Phani Majumdar
Phani Majumdar was a pioneering Indian film director, who worked in Bengali and Hindi cinema, most known for his film ''Street Singer (1938 film), Street Singer'' (1938) starring K.L. Saigal noted for its song, ''Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye'', Meena Kumari classic ''Aarti (film), Aarti'' (1962) and ''Oonche Log'' (1965). He also worked in Singapore, where he notably made ''Hang Tuah (film), Hang Tuah'' (1955) in Malay, which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 7th Berlin International Film Festival. New Theatres
New Theatres is an Indian film studio. It was formed in Calcutta by producer B. N. Sircar (Birendranath Sircar, the recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award of 1970 And Padma Bhushan in 1972). It was formed on February 10, 1931. The company motto was "''Jivatang Jyotiretu Chhayam,"'' meaning, "Light infusing shadows with life." Sircar preferred to function roughly analogous to an executive producer. He built a processing laboratory, and acquired staff. Once a film subject was selected and a team assembled to create the picture, Sicar ensured that adequate funds were provided, while refraining from interfering with its execution. He made New Theatres a symbol of Cinema of West Bengal, Bengali cinema's artistic good taste and technical excellence. Kanan Devi
Kanan Devi (22 April 1916 – 17 July 1992) was an Indian actress and singer. She was among the early singing stars of Indian cinema, and is credited popularly as the first star of Bengali cinema. Her singing style, usually in rapid tempo, was used instrumentally in some of the biggest hits of New Theatres, Kolkata. Biography Kanan Bala was born on 22 April 1916 in Howrah, West Bengal in a Mahishya family to Ratan Chandra Das and Rajobala Devi. Although, her father was financially affluent, having not only a well paid job but also a jewellery shop, but lost all his earnings in vices such as gambling and drinking. Shyam Laha
Shyam Laha (26 November 1911 – 25 October 1973) was an Indian actor in Bengali language, Bengali and Hindi-language films. He was known for his comedy, comic acting. Early life Shyam Laha was born in 1911 in Kolkata, British India. His original name was Kashinath Shil. Laha passed matriculation from Bangabasi College, Bangabashi Collegiate School. He was interested in music, playing the ''Tabla''. Career Actor Pahari Sanyal was impressed by Laha at a function of the Bengali club in Lucknow and introduced him to Bengali director cum actor Pramathesh Barua. Rai Chand Boral (19 October 1903 – 25 November 1981) was an Indian composer, considered by music connoisseurs to be the Bhishma Pitamah, the father of film music in India.
