Mermaids Casino was a casino located on the Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The casino's only gaming options were slot and video poker machines. History Silver Palace (1956-64) When the Silver Palace casino opened in the summer of 1956, it was the first two-level club in Las Vegas, and the escalator, connecting the casino with the lower-level restaurant, was the first in Southern Nevada. Various name changes (1964-1999) The Silver Palace gave way to Carousel Casino in July 1964, followed by Gambler's Hall of Fame Casino in 1974. Derek Stevens
Derek Stevens (born September 17, 1967) is an American businessman who owns several hotel-casinos in downtown Las Vegas. Stevens, along with his brother Greg, purchased the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino in 2008, followed in 2011 by Fitzgeralds, which they renamed as The D Las Vegas. He also owned the Las Vegas 51s baseball team from 2008 to 2013, and built the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center in 2014. Fremont Street Experience
The Fremont Street Experience (FSE) is a pedestrian mall and attraction in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The FSE occupies the westernmost five blocks of Fremont Street, including the area known for years as "Glitter Gulch", and portions of some other adjacent streets. The central attraction is a barrel vault canopy, high at the peak and four blocks, or approximately , in length. While Las Vegas is known for never turning the outside casino lights off, each show begins by turning off the lights on all of the buildings, including the casinos, under the canopy. Before each show, one bidirectional street that crosses the Experience is blocked off for safety reasons. Concerts, usually free, are also held on three stages. La Bayou was a casino located on the Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The casino had of gaming space with 125 slot machines. By the time of its closing, La Bayou was one of the few casinos in Las Vegas where slot machines paid out in coins, rather than vouchers. History Northern Club: 1920-43 The business opened in 1913 as the Las Vegas Coffee House. In 1920 Mayme Stocker renamed it the Northern Club, offering liquor and gambling when both were illegal, during the Prohibition era. The Golden Gate Hotel & Casino is located at One Fremont Street in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. A part of the Fremont Street Experience, it is the oldest and smallest hotel (122 rooms) on the Fremont Street Experience. John F. Miller initially opened a temporary tent hotel – the Miller Hotel – on the property in 1905, while he planned to construct Hotel Nevada, a permanent hotel structure. The first record of Hotel Nevada being open is a blurb in Las Vegas Age on January 13, 1906. A casino operated within the hotel until a statewide gambling ban took effect in 1909. In 1931, the property was expanded and renamed as Sal Sagev ("Las Vegas" spelled backwards). In 1955, Golden Gate Casino, a separate business, opened on the ground floor of the hotel. Las Vegas Club was a hotel and casino located on the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The Las Vegas Club opened in 1930, joining the Las Vegas Hotel which had opened in 1908. The Las Vegas Club was relocated across the street in 1949. At its new location, the Las Vegas Club operated within the Overland Hotel, which was established in 1905. Jackie Gaughan and Mel Exber purchased the Las Vegas Club in 1962, and added a sports theme. Hotel towers were added in 1980 and 1996; the latter tower was part of a $35 million expansion. Exber died in 2002, and Gaughan sold the Las Vegas Club to Barrick Gaming in 2004. Barrick's partner, Tamares Group, bought out Barrick's ownership stake in 2005. Circa Resort & Casino is a casino and hotel resort in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, on the Fremont Street Experience. The property was previously occupied by the Las Vegas Club hotel-casino, the Mermaids Casino, and the Glitter Gulch strip club. Circa is owned by brothers Derek Stevens, Derek and Greg Stevens, who also own other downtown casinos.
