Sant'Eufemia Altarpiece
The ''Sant'Eufemia Altarpiece'' is a 1526-1530 oil on panel painting by Moretto da Brescia, originally on the high altar of Sant'Afra, Brescia, Sant'Afra in Brescia and now in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in the town. The Sant'Afra Reliquary was also based on the painting. The painting's lower register shows saints Benedict of Nursia, Saint Euphemia, Euphemia, Justina of Padua, Justina and Paterius. In 1805 the monastery attached to Sant'Afra was suppressed and converted into a barracks and the church was made subsidiary to Sant'Afra on via Francesco Crispi (now Sant'Angela Merici),Pier Virgilio Begni Redona, pag. 241 whose Fabbriceria decided to donate the painting to the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in 1867 in exchange for a painting by Enea Salmeggia from the same Tosio collection. Moretto Da Brescia
Alessandro Bonvicino (also Buonvicino) (possibly 22 December 1554), more commonly known as Moretto, or in Italian Il Moretto da Brescia (the Moor of Brescia), was an Italian Renaissance painter from Brescia, where he also mostly worked. His dated works span the period from 1524 to 1554, but he was already described as a master in 1516. He was mainly a painter of altarpieces that tend towards sedateness, mostly for churches in and around Brescia, but also in Bergamo, Milan, Verona, and Asola; many remain in the churches they were painted for. The majority of these are on canvas, but a considerable number, including some large pieces, are created on wood panels. There are only a few surviving drawings from the artist. He also painted a few portraits, but these are more influential. Sant'Afra, Brescia
The church of Sant'Afra in Brescia, also known as the church of Sant'Afra in Sant'Eufemia, is located on Corso Magenta, near Piazzale Arnaldo. History Built initially in the 1450s, it underwent major reconstructions starting in the 1600s. It contains a number of prominent artworks, including paintings by Sante Cattaneo, Paolo Veronese, and Enea Salmeggia. The latter painting replaced in 1867 the ‘’Altarpiece of Sant'Eufemia’’ (1526-1530), painted by Alessandro Bonvicino, known as il Moretto, and which was moved to the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo. The term "Sant'Eufemia" derives from the fact, that the church was initially annexed to a monastery associated with the church of Sant'Eufemia della Fonte, just outside the medieval walls of the city. The Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo is a public art museum in Brescia, Lombardy, Italy. Established in 1851, the museum exhibits mainly paintings by local artists dated from the Thirteenth through the Eighteenth century. The museum's current collection includes over 800 works of painting and sculpture, displayed in 21 galleries., Italy. The museum reopened on 17 March 2018 after a major nine-year-long renovation project. Saint Euphemia
Euphemia (; 'well-spoken f), known as Euphemia the All-praised in the Eastern Orthodox Church, was a virgin martyr, who died for her faith at Chalcedon in 303 AD. According to tradition, Euphemia was martyred for refusing to offer sacrifices to Ares. She was arrested and after suffering various tortures, died in the arena at Chalcedon from a wound sustained from a bear. Her tomb became a site of pilgrimages. She is commemorated on September 16. Historical background Euphemia's name and year of death are recorded in the 5th century '' Martyrologium Hieronymianum'', the earliest extant list of Christian martyrs. Justina Of Padua
Justina of Padua (; ) is a Christian saint and a patroness of the city of Padua. Her feast day is October 7. She was devoted to religion from her earliest years and took the vow of perpetual virginity. When she was brought before Maximian the prefect, she remained firm against all attacks. The prefect caused her to be slain with the sword. Hagiography Justina was a virgin of noble birth in the city which claims her patronage, i.e. Padua who lived some time between the 1st and 3rd centuries. Her father Vitalian was a rich nobleman and prefect of Padua. Her parents were reportedly converted to Christianity by the preaching of Saint Prosdocimus, the first bishop of Padua, and not having been blessed with children up to that time, they received Justina in answer to their prayer. Paterius (died 606) was a bishop of Brescia. He is known as a compiler, in particular of works of Pope Gregory I, for whom he had worked as a notary. His sole surviving work is the ''Liber testimoniorum veteris testamenti'', an anthology of Gregory's works of biblical exegesis, arranged in the order of the biblical passages discussed. Enea Salmeggia (c. 1556 – 23 February 1626) was an Italian painter of the late-Renaissance period, active mainly in his native city of Bergamo. Biography He was also known as ''Il Talpino''. He trained with members of the Campi family, and later with members of the Procaccini family in Milan. For the church of the Passion in Milan, he painted a ''Christ’s Agony in the Garden'' and a ''Flagellation''. His ''Virgin and child with saints Roch and others'' is found in the Brera Gallery.
