Sandhayak-class Survey Ship (1981)
The ''Sandhayak''-class survey ships are a series of eight vessels built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata and Goa Shipyard, Vasco for the Indian Navy. While ''Sandhayak'', ''Investigator'', ''Nirdeshak'', ''Nirupak'' were built in GRSE; ''Sarveshak'', ''Jamuna'', ''Darshak'', ''Sutlej'' were built by Goa Shipyard.Saunders 2002, p. 316. The vessels equipped with four survey motorboats, two small boats and are powered by two diesel engines with a top speed of . Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd, abbreviated as GRSE, is one of India's leading Defense industry, defence shipyards, located in Kolkata. World Hydrography Day, 21 June, was adopted by the International Hydrographic Organization as an annual celebration to publicise the work of hydrographers and the importance of hydrography. Origins The International Hydrographic Bureau was established in 1921 for the purpose of providing a mechanism for consultation between governments on such matters as technical standards, safe navigation and the protection of the marine environment. The Southern Naval Command is one of the three, command-level formations of the Indian Navy. Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is a public sector undertaking for defence ship building located on the West Coast of India at Vasco da Gama, Goa. It was established in 1957, originally by the colonial government of the Portuguese in India as the "Estaleiros Navais de Goa", to build barges to be used in Goa's growing mining industry, which took off after the establishment of India's blockade of Goa in 1955.
