Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) was an English literary figure and compiler of ''A Dictionary of the English Language''; often referred to as "Dr. Johnson." Samuel Johnson
Samuel Johnson (18 September 1709 – 13 December 1784), often called Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. The ''Oxford Dictionary of National Biography'' calls him "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". Born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, he attended Pembroke College, Oxford until lack of funds forced him to leave. After working as a teacher, he moved to London and began writing for ''The Gentleman's Magazine''. Early works include '' Life of Mr Richard Savage'', the poems ''London'' and '' The Vanity of Human Wishes'' and the play ''Irene''. Samuel Johnson (New Zealand Editor)
Samuel Johnson (16 March 1827 – 6 August 1905) was a New Zealand printer, newspaper proprietor and editor. He was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England, on 16 March 1827. After a career in journalism and printing in Castleford, Yorkshire, Johnson emigrated to New Zealand in the company of William Rawson Brame's Albertland settlers. The Albertlanders intended to set up a model community in New Zealand; Johnson had been appointed the group's editor and printer. He left the group in 1862, working in Auckland and Dunedin before returning to Albertown in 1863. The settlement collapsed in 1864, and by 1866 Johnson was living in Blenheim, where he and his brother Thomas established the ''Marlborough Express''. Originally a weekly paper, the ''Express''s circulation eventually increased to twice weekly. Now owned by Stuff Ltd., it prints daily. Samuel Johnson (10October 182219February 1882) was a United States clergyman and author. Biography Johnson was born on 10 October 1822 in Salem, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard in 1842, and from the Harvard Divinity School in 1846. He joined no religious denomination. Save for one year with a Unitarian church in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where he displeased his congregation by his opposition to slavery, he was not settled as a minister until 1853. In 1853, he established an independent society in Lynn, Massachusetts, with which he remained till 1870, when he withdrew to complete studies of many years, the results of which appeared later in his publications. He died on 19 February 1882 in North Andover, Massachusetts. Literary work With Samuel Longfellow, Johnson compiled a ''Book of Hymns'' (1846) and ''Hymns of the Spirit'' (1864). Samuel William Johnson (born 1 December 1992) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for club FC Halifax Town. He is the club's all-time record appearance maker. Johnson turned professional at Port Vale in April 2011, and played on loan at non-League Stafford Rangers later in the year.
