Samuel Burton (MP)
Samuel Burton (1687-1733) of Burton Hall was an 18th-century Irish MP and High Sheriff of Carlow. He was born the eldest son of Benjamin Burton, a wealthy banker who was Member of the Irish House of Commons for Dublin city and Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1706–7, and his wife Grace Stratford, daughter of Robert Stratford of Belan, County Kildare. He was elected MP for Sligo Borough in 1713 and appointed High Sheriff of Carlow for 1724. He was again elected MP in 1727, this time for Dublin Borough. He married firstly Anne Campbell, daughter of Charles Campbell of Dublin, with whom he had three sons and a daughter. Anne was killed accidentally by the collapse of a scaffold in 1714 at the coronation of King George I. He was succeeded in his estates by his eldest son, Benjamin, MP and Privy Councillor. Samuel is a figure who, in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible, plays a key role in the transition from the biblical judges to the United Kingdom of Israel under Saul, and again in the monarchy's transition from Saul to David. He is venerated as a prophet in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In addition to his role in the Bible, Samuel is mentioned in Jewish rabbinical literature, in the Christian New Testament, and in the second chapter of the Quran (although the text does not mention him by name). He is also treated in the fifth through seventh books of '' Antiquities of the Jews'', written by the Jewish scholar Josephus in the first century. He is first called "the Seer" in 1 Samuel 9:9. The Venerable Samuel Barton was an Anglican priest in the first half of the 17th century. Burton was born in Staffordshire and educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Sam Burton
Samuel Burton (10 November 1926 – 8 October 2020) was an English professional footballer who played his entire career as a goalkeeper for Swindon Town, making 463 appearances in the Football League and 509 in all first-team competitions. Only John Trollope, Maurice Owen and Fraser Digby played more times for the club. As of October 2018, Burton was still making appearances at Swindon Town's Former Players' Association events, at the age of 91. He died in October 2020 at the age of 93. He had been diagnosed with cancer 12 weeks prior and suffered from dementia.
