Salluit
Salluit (, "the thin ones") is the second northernmost Inuit community in Quebec, Canada, located on Sugluk Inlet close to the Hudson Strait and was formerly known as Sugluk. Its population was 1,483 in the Canada 2016 Census and the population centre had 1,075 people. It is not accessible by road, but by air through Salluit Airport. Salluit means "The Thin Ones" in Inuktitut, referring to a time when local inhabitants were facing starvation as a result of a lack of wildlife. History In 1925, an independent trader opened a trading post on the site of present-day Salluit. Not to be outdone, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) quickly established its own post on the far shore of Sugluk Inlet but relocated it soon after to Deception Bay, about to the east. Salluit Airport is located near the community of Salluit, Quebec, Canada. There are no roads into Salluit, so the airport provides the only means for the residents to access southern Quebec. Nord-du-Québec (; ) is the largest, but the least populous, of the seventeen administrative regions of Quebec, Canada. Elisapie Isaac (also known simply as Elisapie; syllabics: ; born 1977) is a Canadian Inuk musician, broadcaster, documentary filmmaker, activist, and actress. Sugluk (band)
Sugluk (variously styled Sugluc, SUGLUC, or the Sugluk Group) were a Canadian rock band based in northern Quebec. Led by singer George Kakayuk and guitarist Tayara Papigatuk, the group toured extensively through the 1970s and 1980s and recorded two singles with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's CBC North, Northern Service in 1975. The band wrote songs in both English and Inuktitut. They were formed in Salluit, Quebec (formerly known as Sugluk) in the early 1970s and reunited in 2013. Salluit-born pop singer Elisapie Isaac, who is Kakayuk's niece, performed with the band in her youth. Annie Ittoshat
Annie Napartuk Ittoshat (born 1970) is an Inuk Canadian Anglican bishop. Since 2019, she has been one of three suffragan bishops of the Diocese of the Arctic in the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC). Alongside Lucy Netser, who was elected and consecrated at the same time, she is the first female Inuk bishop in the world. Early life, career and education Annie Napartuk was born in 1970 in Kuujjuarapik, a community on Hudson Bay in Quebec. When she was young, her Inuk parents were forced to leave their coastal camps as part of an effort to "civilize" their nomadic lifestyle; her father had his sled dogs slaughtered and her brothers were removed to residential schools. Napartuk was too young for a residential school, but she experienced the trauma of seeing her parents succumb to alcoholism. Kativik (ᑲᑎᕕᒃ) is a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) of Quebec, with geographical code 992. Its land area is 443,372.20 km2 (171,186.96 sq mi), and its population was 12,090 at the 2011 Census of Canada. Lucy Qinnuayuak
Lucy Qinnuayuak (; 1915–1982) was an Inuk graphic artist and printmaker. Early life Qinnuayuak was born in or near Salluit, Quebec in 1915. At an early age, her family moved to Baffin Island, where they settled in Cape Dorset. After the death of her father, her mother remarried. Lucy traveled with her mother and stepfather on hunting trips in the Cape Dorset region. Artistic career Qinnuayuak began drawing in the late 1950s while living in Kangia, where she and her brother-in-law Niviaqsi produced drawings at the request of James Archibald Houston. Her work was first included in the Cape Dorset print collection in 1961, and by the time of her death in 1982, 136 of her prints were published in the collection.
