Saint Jerome
Jerome (; la, Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus; grc-gre, Εὐσέβιος Σωφρόνιος Ἱερώνυμος; – 30 September 420), also known as Jerome of Stridon, was a Christian priest, confessor, theologian, and historian; he is commonly known as Saint Jerome. Jerome was born at Stridon, a village near Emona on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia. He is best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate) and his commentaries on the whole Bible. Jerome attempted to create a translation of the Old Testament based on a Hebrew version, rather than the Septuagint, as Latin Bible translations used to be performed before him. His list of writings is extensive, and beside his biblical works, he wrote polemical and historical essays, always from a theologian's perspective. Saint Jerome (El Greco)
''Saint Jerome'' is a 1609 painting by El Greco, now in the Frick Collection, New York. The artist frequently returned to this subject and here shows Jerome dressed as a cardinal in a pose reminiscent of his '' Portrait of Cardinal Tavera'' and '' Portrait of Jerónimo de Cevallos'', pointing at an open book on a table covered with a green tapestry. The deep folds in the garments point to the influence of Michelangelo and Byzantine icon painting. ''Davy'' is Coconut Records' 2009 second release. The album is, as was '' Nighttiming'', the product of Jason Schwartzman, who wrote all of the songs and performs the majority of the instruments. The first official single for the album was "Microphone." The song was also used in the 2012 film LOL, starring Miley Cyrus and subsequently featured on the soundtrack. A portion of "Any Fun" is in a teaser video on the Coconut Records MySpace page. The track listing and album art first appeared on the independent online music store Amie Street. Like ''Nighttiming,'' the CD pressing of ''Davy'' contains demo and alternate versions of the album's songs after the final track. The songs "Wires" and "I Am Young" were featured on the ''Funny People'' original soundtrack. Two music videos were made for this album; "Microphone" and "Any Fun." ''Saint Jerome Writing'' is a painting by the Italian master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio in 1607 or 1608, housed in the Oratory of St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta, Malta. It can be compared with Caravaggio's earlier version of the same subject in the Borghese Gallery in Rome. History Caravaggio arrived in Malta on July 12, 1607. He had spent the previous months in Naples, where he had sought refuge with his powerful protectors the Colonna family after killing a man in a brawl in Rome the previous year. In Naples he had been an instant success, achieving ten commissions, including a number of large and very prestigious altarpieces, in less than a year, and inspiring a following of Caravaggisti among the city's artists. ''Saint Jerome Writing'', also called ''Saint Jerome in His Study'' or simply ''Saint Jerome'', is an oil painting by Italian painter Caravaggio. Generally dated to 1605–06, the painting is located in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. Composition The painting depicts Saint Jerome, a Doctor of the Church in Roman Catholicism and a popular subject for painting, even for Caravaggio, who produced other paintings of Jerome in Meditation and engaged in writing. In this image, Jerome is reading intently, an outstretched arm resting with quill. It has been suggested that Jerome is depicted in the act of translating the ''Vulgate''. ''Saint Jerome in His Study'' is an oil painting on panel attributed to the workshop of the early Netherlandish painter Jan van Eyck, dated to 1442 (the year after the master's death) and now in the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit. History Since the date on the painting is subsequent to Jan van Eyck's death (June 1441), it is likely that the work, left unfinished, had been completed by members of his workshop, or his brother Lambert. A work with a similar subject is mentioned in the inventories of Palazzo Medici in Florence, which had been drawn up after the death of Lorenzo de' Medici in 1492. Even if not the work now at Detroit, this could have been the latter's prototype, since the painting is not unanimously attributed to van Eyck. The Francesco ''St Jerome'' is an oil painting on copper attributed to the circle of the Italian Renaissance artist Palma the Younger, dating from c. 1595. The painting was believed to possibly be the lost original work by Palma when it was rediscovered in January 2008 and became known to the public upon its featuring in a number of newspapers in the United Kingdom and around the world. Named after Palma's patron, Francesco Maria II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino. The Duke is believed to have commissioned the original composition and the Francesco St Jerome is the finest surviving example of the now believed lost masterpiece. Saint-Jérôme () ( 2021 population 80,213) is a suburban city located about northwest of Montreal on the Rivière du Nord. It is part of the North Shore sector of Greater Montreal. It is a gateway to the Laurentian Mountains and its resorts via the Autoroute des Laurentides. Saint-Jérôme (also designated exo2, formerly known as Blainville–Saint-Jérôme) is a commuter railway line in Greater Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is operated by Exo, the organization that operates public transport services across this region. The Saint-Jérôme line was operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) between 1882 and 1981. The line was not active until Exo's predecessor agency, the Agence Métropolitaine de transport (AMT), resumed passenger service in 1997. There are 14 inbound and 14 outbound departures each weekday.
