Sailboarding At The Olympics
Windsurfing has been one of the Olympic sailing events at the Summer Olympics since 1984 for men and 1992 for women. All sailors use the same One Design boards, daggerboards, fins and sails. The equipment is chosen to allow racing in a wide range of sailing conditions, as during the Olympic Games events must take place as scheduled whether or not there is enough wind for planing. Sailing (sport), Sailing (also known as yachting until 2000) has been one of the Olympic sports since the 1896 Summer Olympics, Games of the I Olympiad, held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Despite being scheduled in the first Olympic program, the races were canceled due to severe weather conditions. Sailing At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad (1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece). With the exception of 1904 and possibly the cancelled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 2008 consisted of a total of nine sailing classes (eleven disciplines). Eleven races are scheduled for each event except for the 49er class, for which 16 races are scheduled from 9 August 2008 to 21 August 2008 of the coast of the Qingdao International Sailing Centre facing the Yellow Sea. Of the 11 (16) races, 10 (15) are scheduled as opening races and one as a medal race. The sailing was done on four different types of courses. Bruce Kendall
Anthony Bruce Kendall (born 27 June 1964) is a two-time Olympic medallist in sailing for New Zealand. He has served as an elected member of the Howick Local Board since 2019. Yachting Kendall's family are yachtsmen. He began sailing in the P-class and Starlings before progressing to crewing 470 and keelboats. When he was 14 he turned to windsurfing. Olympics Competing in boardsailing, Kendall's first medal was a bronze at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, he improved to win the gold medal. Kendall also competed at the following Olympics in Barcelona, just failing to win another medal due to faulty equipment. Barbara Anne Kendall (born 30 August 1967) is a former boardsailor from New Zealand. She competed at five Summer Olympic Games and won gold, silver and bronze medals. Biography Kendall was born in Papakura on 30 August 1967, the daughter of Tony and Peggy Kendall. She was raised in the Auckland suburb of Bucklands Beach and attended Macleans College. Alessandra Sensini (born 26 January 1970 in Grosseto) is an Italian windsurfer. She is a 4-time Olympian, winning a gold medal and three additional medals. She also won 3 gold, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze at World Championships, as well as 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals at European Championships. IQFoil
iQFoil is a windsurfing class selected by World Sailing to replace the RS:X for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The discipline has similarities to Formula Windsurfing, however a notable difference is that sailors only use one sail. The sail size is 9m2 for the men and 8m2 for the women. The rider has a choice between using a hydrofoil or a conventional 68 cm fin. Sailing At The 2024 Summer Olympics
Sailing competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics are scheduled to run from 28 July to 8 August at Marseille Marina. The number of sailors competing across ten different classes at these Games has been reduced from 350 to 330, with an equal distribution between men and women. Furthermore, several significant changes are instituted in the sailing program for Paris 2024 to reinforce gender equality and vast diversity among the nations in the qualifying process. Sailing competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo took place from 25 July to 4 August 2021 at the Enoshima Yacht Harbor in Enoshima. The venue was also used for the 1964 Olympic Games although significantly regenerated, the IOC now encouraging regeneration, cost reductions and sustainability. The RS:X, Laser, Laser Radial, Finn, 470, 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra17 are all returning for 2020; there are no significant changes to the Olympic programme from 2016. Competition format Qualification The number of sailors competing has been reduced from 380 to 350, with an equal numbers of male and female athletes for the first time ever. The qualification period commenced at the 2018 Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. Sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from 8–18 August at Marina da Gloria in Guanabara Bay. The sailing classes had two changes from the 2012 Summer Olympics events. Sailing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was held 29 July – 11 August 2012 at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Weymouth. The 2012 sailing program consisted of a total of ten events (eight classes). Eleven fleet races were scheduled off the coast at Weymouth Bay for each event, except for the 49er and the Elliott 6m classes. For the 49er class, a total of 16 races were scheduled. Of the 11 (16) races, 10 (15) were scheduled as opening races and the last one as medal race. For the Elliott 6m a series of match races was scheduled.
