Sonos, Inc. is an American audio equipment manufacturer headquartered in Santa Barbara, California. The company was founded in 2002 by John MacFarlane, Craig Shelburne, Tom Cullen, and Trung Mai. Sonos has partnered with over 100 companies that offer music services, including Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, MOG, QQ Music, YouTube Music and Amazon Music. Sonos Studio
Sonos Studio is an art gallery and studio in Los Angeles, United States, established on May 9, 2012, and owned by American consumer electronics company Sonos. The studio has also had temporary pop-up locations in New York City, London, and Amsterdam. In 2016, the Los Angeles studio permanently closed its event space to the public. Today, the space operates as a production studio and private showroom. Overview The original gallery combined collections of Sonos wireless speakers, art, and technology, but also hosted musicians in certain events where a band or solo artist performed at the location. John MacFarlane (entrepreneur)
John MacFarlane is an American entrepreneur and executive. In 2002, he co-founded and became the CEO of Sonos. He served as its CEO and board member until stepping down in 2017. Education MacFarlane graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in electrical and electronics engineering. He then went to the University of California, Santa Barbara for a master's degree in the same discipline in 1990. Career After leaving college, MacFarlane created a messaging system that he sold to companies such as AT&T through his own company, Software.com. There, he met Craig Shelburne. Eventually, Software.com merged with Phone.com and became Openwave, a new company based in Redwood City, California. MOG was a paid subscription Online music store, online music service and blog network, where subscribers could listen to and read about music. Apple Music is an audio and video streaming service developed by Apple Inc. Users can select music to stream to their device on-demand, or listen to existing playlists. Tidal (stylized TIDAL) is a Norwegian-American music streaming service, launched in 2014 by the Norwegian-Swedish public company Aspiro. Tidal is now majority-owned by Block, Inc., the owner of the point-of-sale system Square.
