SFSU College Of Ethnic Studies
The College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University was the first Ethnic studies college in the United States. History In 1968, the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF) was created as a coalition of student groups at San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University) and the University of California, Berkeley. The coalition opposed Eurocentrism in higher education and a lack of diversity. In 1968 and 1969, the TWLF held the longest student strikes in American history at SF State College with the goal of having fifteen demands be met. The college was founded in Fall 1969 to meet a portion of the demands. In 2016, hundreds of students protested against budget cuts to the college and for the expansion of the college's programs. Until 2019, the college was the only College of Ethnic Studies in the United States. Ethnic Studies
Ethnic studies, in the United States, is the interdisciplinary study of difference—chiefly race, ethnicity, and nation, but also sexuality, gender, and other such markings—and power, as expressed by the state, by civil society, and by individuals. Its antecedents came before the civil rights era, as early as the 1900s. During that time, educator and historian W. E. B. Du Bois expressed the need for teaching black history. However, Ethnic Studies became widely known as a secondary issue that arose after the civil rights era. Ethnic studies was originally conceived to re-frame the way that specific disciplines had told the stories, histories, struggles and triumphs of people of color on what was seen to be their own terms. Third World Liberation Front
In 1968, the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF), a coalition of the Black Students Union, the Native Students Room, the Latin American Students Organization, the Filipino American Collegiate Endeavor (PACE) the Filipino-American Students Organization, the Asian American Political Alliance, and El Renacimiento, a Mexican-American student organization, formed at San Francisco State University (SFSU) to call for campus reform. Another Third World Liberation Front was formed at University of California, Berkeley in January 1969. Eurocentrism
Eurocentrism (also Eurocentricity or Western-centrism) refers to viewing Western world, the West as the center of world events or superior to other cultures. The exact scope of Eurocentrism varies from the entire Western world to just the continent of Europe or even more narrowly, to Western Europe#Cold War, Western Europe (especially during the Cold War).
