Río Amazonas Airport
Río Amazonas Airport is an airport serving Shell Mera, a town in the Pastaza Province of Ecuador. The airport was established in 1937 by Royal Dutch Shell and abandoned in 1948. In 1949 the Mission Aviation Fellowship, a Christian missionary group, established themselves in the area and used the airport as their main base. Accidents and incidents In March 2016, a military plane taking off from Amazonas Airport crashed in Pastaza province, killing all 22 soldiers aboard. Shell Mera
Shell (also Shell Mera) is a city located on the western edge of the Ecuadorian Amazon and in the eastern foothills of the Andes. It is located about southeast of Quito, and roughly west of the provincial capital, Puyo. Its name comes from the Royal Dutch Shell corporation. Shell Oil base Shell Mera was established in 1937 as a Shell Oil Company base. The base consisted of little more than several basic shacks and a airstrip. It was operated as part of Shell's prospecting efforts in the region. The base was located near some Indian tribes who strongly opposed the exploitation of resources found in their ancestral territories. The Indians attacked Shell several times, resulting in the deaths of several employees. The oil company abandoned the base in 1948. Pastaza Province
Pastaza () is a province in the Oriente of Ecuador located in the eastern jungle. The capital is Puyo, founded on May 12, 1899 and which has 36,700 inhabitants. The city is now accessible by paved roads, a recent development; the main road from Baños follows the Pastaza river into the province. The Pastaza River surges into the province from the west and as the landscape flattens, meanders on to the Napo, a tributary of the Amazon. Natural resources of Pastaza are bananas, grapefruit, tobacco, cocoa and coffee. Tea has successfully been cultivated by a few British companies, and in the mid-1980s one of the companies was honored by a visit from Princess Margaret from the royal family of Britain. 2016 Ecuadorian Air Force Arava Crash
On 15 March 2016, an IAI Arava transport aircraft of the Ecuadorian Army crashed in the eastern part of the country. The accident is the deadliest involving an IAI Arava, and the single deadliest incident suffered by the Ecuadorian military. Accident The Arava plane took off from the Río Amazonas military airport in Shell in Pastaza Province at 12:51 local time. It was carrying 19 Ecuadorian paratroopers belonging to the 9th Special Forces ('Patria') Brigade, for a skydiving exercise; as well as 3 crew members (2 pilots and a mechanic). The pilot had reportedly asked for permission to return to the airport due to adverse weather conditions shortly before contact was lost with the aircraft. The aircraft crashed at 14:30 local time in a mountainous area, killing all 22 on board.
