Russell Batiste Jr.
David Russell Batiste Jr. (December 12, 1965 – September 30, 2023) was an American drummer based in New Orleans. Batiste played drums for the bands the funky Meters, Papa Grows Funk, and Vida Blue. Biography David Russell Batiste Jr. was born in New Orleans on December 12, 1965. He was a member of the New Orleans musical family, the Batiste family; he started playing drums at the age of four. He also learned to play keyboards, saxophone, guitar and bass, and started to play in the family band when he was seven. Batiste left college after two years to join Charmaine Neville's band. He joined the funky Meters, the reincarnation of the funk band The Meters, in 1989. William Thomas "Champion Jack" Dupree (July 23, 1909 or July 4, 1910 – January 21, 1992) was an American blues and boogie-woogie pianist and singer. ''Crossing Lines'' is an album by Vida Blue, a band led by Phish keyboard player Page McConnell. It was released in 2019 by ATO Records. On the album, which followed a 15-year recording hiatus, McConnell is joined by two original Vida Blue members, bassist Oteil Burbridge and drummer Russell Batiste, along with a new addition, guitarist Adam Zimmon. The Spam Allstars also appear on two tracks. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Timothy Monger wrote: "the musicianship and interplay between these musicians is excellent, and while ''Crossing Lines'' doesn't necessarily feel essential, it has its moments and marks a worthy third chapter in the band's canon." ''The Illustrated Band'' is the second album from Vida Blue, featuring Phish keyboardist Page McConnell along with bassist Oteil Burbridge and drummer Russell Batiste. The album features four long tracks performed alongside The Spam Allstars, a Grammy-winning Afro-Cuban group that also toured as a part of the Vida Blue band in the summer of 2003 and the early winter of 2004. Shortly after the tour, Page McConnell briefly retired from the music business following the breakup of Phish, therefore ending all Vida Blue related activities indefinitely. The album title is a reference to Ray Bradbury's science fiction book '' The Illustrated Man''. Reception In a review for AllMusic, David Jeffries wrote that the album "makes for a funky good-time listen" but cautioned that "it's not the big payoff one would have hoped." P-Vine Records is an independent record label based in Tokyo, Japan. History It was started in 1976 by Blues Interactions, a firm founded in 1975 by Yasufumi Higurashi and Akira Kochi, as a record label focused on black music. The label name comes from the "Peavine Branch" of the Mississippi Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad sung in blues songs by Charley Patton and Big Joe Williams. In the early years, the label focused on blues and R&B but gradually expanded to wider genres such as jazz, Latin, funk, j-pop, house music, and garage punk.
