Runnymede and Weybridge is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Ben Spencer, a Conservative. The constituency was created in 1997 and was represented from then until 2019 by Philip Hammond, who was Foreign Secretary from 2014 to 2016 and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2016 to 2019. Boundaries The constituency is in north Surrey and comprises the whole of the area of the Borough of Runnymede plus the town of Weybridge in the Borough of Elmbridge. Chertsey and Walton was a late 20th century parliamentary constituency in Surrey which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first-past-the-post voting system. History The main impetus for the seat's creation was growth in housing and population across the county to allow for a new seat, North West Surrey, which took most settlements, including the expanded towns of Camberley and Egham from the old Chertsey seat. The constituency was created for the February 1974 general election from parts of the seats of Chertsey and Esher. It was abolished for the 1997 general election. Philip Hammond
Philip Hammond, Baron Hammond of Runnymede (born 4 December 1955) is a British politician and life peer who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2016 to 2019, Foreign Secretary from 2014 to 2016, and Defence Secretary from 2011 to 2014. A member of the Conservative Party, he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Runnymede and Weybridge from 1997 to 2019. Born in Epping, Essex, Hammond studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at University College, Oxford. He worked from 1984 as a company director at Castlemead Ltd – a healthcare and nursing company. From 1995 to 1997, he acted as an adviser to the government of Malawi before his election to Parliament. Woodham is a suburban village in Surrey next to New Haw and contiguous with two suburbs of Woking: Sheerwater and West Byfleet. Amenities Pubs The Victoria public house reopened under the ownership of Prospect Pubs and Bars, having previously been unoccupied for some time. Virginia Water
Virginia Water is a commuter village in the Borough of Runnymede in northern Surrey, England. It is home to the Wentworth Estate and the Wentworth Club. The area has much woodland and occupies a large minority of the Runnymede district. Its name is shared with the lake on its western boundary within Windsor Great Park. Virginia Water has excellent transport links with London–Trumps Green and Thorpe Green touch the M3, Thorpe touches the M25, and Heathrow Airport is seven miles to the north-east. Many of the detached houses are on the Wentworth Estate, the home of the Wentworth Club which has four golf courses. The Ryder Cup was first played there. Thorpe, Surrey
Thorpe is a village in Surrey, England, between Egham, Virginia Water and Chertsey. It is centred WSW of Charing Cross and its land adjoins the circle of the M25, near the M3 — its ward covers . Its traditional area with natural boundaries covers one square mile less. Thorpe has been a manor since at least 1066 and has had a Christian place of worship since at least the 7th century. It has never had a civil parish nor major industry and relies for much of its amenities on its two main adjoining towns. The River Bourne or Chertsey Bourne flows through its far south. Ottershaw is a village in the Borough of Runnymede in Surrey, England, approximately southwest of central London. The village developed in the mid-19th century from a number of separate hamlets and became a parish in its own right in 1871. The nearest town is Addlestone, approximately to the east. The M25 is accessible via junction 11. Economy and transport Ottershaw is largely a mixture of a London commuter belt and a retirement settlement. New Haw is a village which is part of the Borough of Runnymede in Surrey, England. It is located approximately south of Addlestone and southwest by west of London. Geography New Haw borders Byfleet, Addlestone, Weybridge, Ottershaw, West Byfleet and Woodham. The Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency, an executive agency of DEFRA, has its central laboratories in a semi-rural part of New Haw. The laboratory is notable as being one of the principal test centres for the H5N1 virus. Longcross
Longcross is a village in the Borough of Runnymede in Surrey, England, approximately southwest of central London. Its name is thought to come from a marker, placed where the parish boundaries of Chertsey, Chobham and Egham met. From the start of the second world war, Longcross was home to a Ministry of Defence facility, where armoured vehicles were designed and tested.
