Rugby union in Australia has a history of organised competition dating back to the late 1860s. Although traditionally most popular in Australia's rugby football strongholds of New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory, ACT, it is played throughout the nation. The principal competition in Australian rugby is Super Rugby, which is a multi-national competition across the South Pacific. Australia enters four teams: the Queensland Reds, Reds of Queensland, the New South Wales Waratahs, Waratahs of New South Wales, the Brumbies of the Australian Capital Territory and the Western Force of Western Australia. The 1991 Rugby World Cup () was the second edition of the Rugby World Cup, and was jointly hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France: at the time, the five European countries who participated in the Six Nations Championship, Five Nations Championship. The Western Force is an Australian professional rugby union team based in Perth, Western Australia, currently competing in Super Rugby, Super Rugby Pacific.
