Rubén Galván (boxer)
Rubén Galván (7 April 1952 – 14 March 2018) was an Argentine footballer who played as a midfielder for Club Atlético Independiente for most of his career. At international level, he was part of the Argentina squad that won the 1978 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Club career Galván is one of the most decorated players in the history of Argentine football with three Copa Libertadores, three Nacional Championships and FIFA World Cup title to his name. Galván was part of the Independiente team that won three consecutive Copa Libertadores titles between 1973 and 1975. He was also part of the team that won back to back Nacional championships in 1977 and 1978. In 1980, he had a short spell with Estudiantes de La Plata but he retired later that year at age 27. Personal life Nicknamed ''el Negro'', Galván had a bout with Hepatitis C that required a liver transplant in 2007. He died of cirrhosis in March 2018. The 1976 Copa Interamericana was the 5th. edition of the Copa Interamericana. The final was contested by Argentine Club Atlético Independiente (champion of 1975 Copa Libertadores) and Mexico's Atlético Español (winner of 1975 CONCACAF Champions' Cup). The final was played under a two-leg format in August 1976. Both matches were held in Estadio Olímpico, Caracas, Venezuela. In the first leg, both teams tied 2–2, while the second leg was also a tie, 0–0. As both teams equaled in points and goal difference, a penalty shoot-out was carried out to decide a champion. The final was contested by Argentine Club Atlético Independiente (champion of 1972 Copa Libertadores) and Hondurean side C.D. Olimpia, Olimpia (winner of 1972 CONCACAF Champions' Cup). The Copa Interamericana () was an international association football, football competition endorsed by CONCACAF (North, Central America and Caribbean) and CONMEBOL (South America). Established in 1969, it was discontinued in 1998 after CONCACAF clubs, particularly those from Mexico, began participating in CONMEBOL competitions. The competition was intended to be contested between the winners of the North American CONCACAF Champions Cup and the South American Copa Libertadores tournaments, although the participants varied at times. The competition was usually contested over a two legged tie, with a playoff or penalty kicks if necessary, but it was common for several consecutive editions to go unheld. 1973 Intercontinental Cup
The 1973 Intercontinental Cup was an association football match played on 28 November 1973, between Juventus, runners-up of the 1972–73 European Cup, and Independiente, winners of the 1973 Copa Libertadores. The match was played at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. It was Juventus' first appearance in the competition and Independiente's fourth appearance after the defeats against Internazionale in 1964 and 1965 and against Ajax in 1972. Despite initially refusing to participate in the competition, Juventus replaced Ajax as the representative UEFA team in the competition after Ajax, as the European champions declined to contest a possible meeting in South America officially for financial reasons.
