Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment Vietnam Deployments 1965–1972
The Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment contributed companies to the 1st Australian Task Force, deployed in Phước Tuy Province, Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1972. While 1st Battalion, RNZIR remained at Terendak Camp in Malaysia, it sent a series of rifle companies to serve with the Australian Army in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the remainder of the regiment, six Territorial Force battalions, remained home in New Zealand. Background In May 1965 the United States government committed its 173rd Airborne Brigade to South Vietnam in a combat role. Being part of the ANZUS pact, Australia and New Zealand were asked to contribute combat forces too. Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment
The Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment is the parent administrative regiment and corps of regular and reserve infantry battalions in the New Zealand Army. It was originally formed in 1947 with a singular Regular regiment and multiple reserve regiments. Over time, the regiments were turned into battalions, the reserve units amalgamated and more regular units raised and disbanded. Currently, the Regiment currently consists of two regular and three reserve battalions. Throughout its existence, units raised in this regiment have served and deployed on operations in Malayan Emergency, Malaya, Vietnam War, Vietnam, Borneo Confrontation, Borneo and various United Nations peacekeeping operations.
