Royal Netherlands Institute For Sea Research
The Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, also known as NIOZ, in Dutch the Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee, is the Dutch national oceanographic institute. It is located on the island of Texel, and in Yerseke, in the Netherlands. The institute was founded in 1876 as the Zoological Station and in 1960 it was renamed to its current name. NIOZ carries out marine research in the waters of the Netherlands and overseas; it also plays a role in educating students, and it offers research facilities to marine scientists from the Netherlands and other countries worldwide. NIOZ has a longstanding collaboration with Utrecht University, for instance in an interdisciplinary Master’s programme Marine Sciences. Dutch ( ) is a West Germanic languages, West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, spoken by about 25 million people as a first language and 5 million as a second language and is the List of languages by total number of speakers, third most spoken Germanic language. Texel
Texel (; Texels dialect: ) is a municipality and an island with a population of 13,643 in North Holland, Netherlands. It is the largest and most populated island of the West Frisian Islands in the Wadden Sea. The island is situated north of Den Helder, northeast of Noorderhaaks, and southwest of Vlieland. Name The name ''Texel'' is Frisian, but because of historical sound-changes in Dutch, where all -x- sounds have been replaced with -s- sounds (compare for instance English ''fox'', Frisian ''fokse'', German ''Fuchs'' with Dutch ''vos''), the name is typically pronounced ''Tessel'' in Dutch. Yerseke
Yerseke (, ) is a village situated on the southern shore of the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt) estuary in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Zeeland. A separate municipality until 1970, it today forms part of the municipality of Reimerswaal (municipality), Reimerswaal. As of 2010 Yerseke had a recorded population of 6,695 inhabitants, living in 2,680 households. The fishing village is well known for its aquaculture. Tourism, Tourists visit the oyster pits, harbors and museum of the town and fishing industry, as well as the annual celebration of the mussel harvest (Mosseldag) in August. Dutch Research Council
The Dutch Research Council (NWO, Dutch: Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) is the national research council of the Netherlands. NWO funds thousands of top researchers at universities and institutes and steers the course of Dutch science by means of subsidies and research programmes. NWO promotes quality and innovation in science. NWO is an independent administrative body under the auspices of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. NWO directs its approximate budget of 1 billion euros towards Dutch universities and institutes, often on a project basis. Wim Mook
Willem Gerrit "Wim" Mook (10 July 1932 – 24 January 2016) was a Dutch isotope physicist. Life and career Mook was born on 10 July 1932 in Groningen. He obtained his doctorate at the University of Groningen in 1968, with a dissertation titled: ''Geochemistry of the stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of natural waters in the Netherlands''. He was a lecturer of isotope physics at the same university between 1975 and 1979. Starting the next year he was professor of isotope physics, until his retirement in 1997. From 1986 he also served as professor at the VU University Amsterdam. RV Pelagia
RV ''Pelagia'' is a research vessel in the service of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research (NIOZ), a research institute of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). It was built in 1991 by Verolme Shipyard in Heusden, The Netherlands, and has been in NIOZ-service since. The RV ''Pelagia'' is due to be replaced but on 14 April 2022 a Dutch court ruled that the original contract must be amended, resulting in a delay of the final tender for the replacement that will bear the name RV ''Anna Weber-van Bosse'', after the Netherlands' first female marine biologist to conduct research at sea. Leeuwarder Courant
The ''Leeuwarder Courant'' is the oldest daily newspaper in the Netherlands. Founded by Abraham Ferwerda, it first appeared in 1752. The ''Leeuwarder Courant'' was the first paper in the Dutch province Friesland and its capital Leeuwarden. It is considered a "popular" (as opposed to "quality") newspaper.
