The Museum of Natural Sciences (, ; , ) is a Brussels museum dedicated to natural history. It is a part of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (; ), itself part of the institutions of the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO). The Dinosaur Hall of the museum is the world's largest museum hall completely dedicated to dinosaurs. Its most important pieces are 30 fossilised ''Iguanodon'' skeletons, which were discovered in 1878 in Bernissart, Belgium. Another famous piece is the Ishango bone, which was discovered in 1960 by Jean de Heinzelin de Braucourt in the Belgian Congo. The museum also houses a research department and a public exhibit department. Brussels Metro
The Brussels Metro ( ; ) is a rapid transit system serving a large part of the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium. It consists of four conventional metro lines and three '' premetro'' lines. The metro-grade lines are M1, M2, M5, and M6 with some shared sections, covering a total of , with 59 metro-only stations. The ''premetro'' network consists of three tram lines ( T4, T7, and T10) that partly travel over underground sections that were intended to be eventually converted into metro lines. Underground stations in the ''premetro'' network use the same design as metro stations. A few short underground tramway sections exist, so there is a total of of underground metro and tram network. François-Joseph Scohy
François-Joseph Scohy (1831–1881) was a Belgian military physician and archaeologist. Life Scohy was born in Gilly, Belgium, on 26 September 1831. He studied medicine and natural science at the Catholic University of Louvain, graduating doctor in both. In 1852 he joined the army, continuing his studies while working as a military medic. In February 1860, while he was garrisoned at Lier, canalisation works dug up bones of enormous size. Lier, Belgium
Lier (; ) is a municipality located in the Belgium, Belgian province of Antwerp (province), Antwerp. It is composed of the city of Lier proper and the village of Koningshooikt. The city centre is surrounded by the river ''Nete'', around which it grew. In 2018, Lier had a total population of 35,712. The total area is 49.70 km making a population density (PD) of 720 per km. Lier Mammoth
The Lier mammoth is the skeleton of a mammoth that was found in 1860 near the Dungelhoeffkazerne in Lier in the Province of Antwerp of Belgium, while digging the diversion canal of the Nete. Its importance was recognised by a military doctor stationed in Lier, François-Joseph Scohy, and the skeleton was excavated, mounted and in 1869 for the first time shown to the public. This was a first skeleton of a mammoth for Western Europe. Only the museum of Saint Petersburg was already in possession of a mammoth skeleton. Because the skeleton is not complete, some bones were recreated in wood. Today, the skeleton is preserved in the museum of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels. Blue Whale
The blue whale (''Balaenoptera musculus'') is a marine mammal and a baleen whale. Reaching a maximum confirmed length of and weighing up to , it is the largest animal known ever to have existed. The blue whale's long and slender body can be of various shades of greyish-blue on its upper surface and somewhat lighter underneath. Bowhead Whale
The bowhead whale (''Balaena mysticetus''), sometimes called the Greenland right whale, Arctic whale, and polar whale, is a species of baleen whale belonging to the family Balaenidae and is the only living representative of the genus '' Balaena''. It is the only baleen whale endemic to the Arctic and subarctic waters, and is named after its characteristic massive triangular skull, which it uses to break through Arctic ice. Bernard Du Bus De Gisignies
Bernard Aimé Léonard du Bus de Gisignies (21 June 1808 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode – 6 July 1874 in Bad Ems) was a Dutch nobleman and later on a Belgium, Belgian politician. He was a collector of arts, books, an ornithologist and paleontologist. Biography De Gisignies was born in Tournai the second son of Leonard Pierre Joseph du Bus de Gisignies. He studied law at the State University of Louvain, but soon became more interested in ornithology. In 1835 he presented a manuscript to the The Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium, Royal Academy of Belgium in which described the bird ''Leptorhynchus pectoralis'' (the banded stilt). He became a member of parliament for Soignies in 1835 and senator for Diksmuide from 1867 to 1874. De Gisignies became the first director of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in 1846.
