Rowing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Single Sculls
The men's single sculls competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was held between 9 and 16 August, at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park. There were 32 competitors from 32 nations. The event was won by Olaf Tufte of Norway, the fifth man to successfully defend an Olympic title in the event (and 12th to win multiple medals of any colour). The silver medal went to Ondřej Synek of the Czech Republic, the nation's first medal in the event (though Czech rower Václav Chalupa had earned silver in 1992 for Czechoslovakia). Mahé Drysdale of New Zealand earned bronze. Both Synek and Drysdale would go on to win medals in the event again in 2012 and 2016 (with Drysdale the gold medallist both times). Background This was the 25th appearance of the event. Rowing had been on the programme in 1896 but was cancelled due to bad weather. Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park
The Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park () was built for the Rowing at the 2008 Summer Olympics, rowing, Canoeing at the 2008 Summer Olympics, canoeing and Swimming at the 2008 Summer Olympics, 10 km open-water swimming events in the 2008 Summer Olympics. It is located in Mapo Village in the Shunyi District in Beijing. The first competitions at the venue were held in August 2007, a year ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympics, 2008 Olympic Games for which it was built. The World Junior Rowing Championships, China Open Canoe/Kayak Slalom and China Canoe/Kayak Flatwater Open were all held in that month as part of the "Good Luck Beijing" series of sporting events. Alan W Campbell (born 9 May 1983) is a British sculler. Biography Alan Campbell was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, and started rowing for his school, Coleraine Academical Institution for Boys. ON leaving, he joined Bann Rowing Club Coleraine. Years later he then left for London and joined Tideway Scullers School. In 2003, Campbell left his degree and won the Diamond Sculls at Henley Royal Regatta. He then made his international debut at the World U23 Championships in 2003, where he was forced to switch from the double to the single sculls five days before the regatta when his sculling partner became ill. Despite this he finished 8th. He competed in the quadruple sculls at the 2004 Summer Olympics, finishing in 12th place. Leandro Salvagno Rattaro (born March 3, 1984) is a Uruguayan rower, who won silver for the quadruple sculls at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and a bronze at the 2006 South American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He made his official debut at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where he finished second for the D-final, and 20th overall in the men's single sculls, with a fastest possible time of 7:01.33. Zhang Liang (; born 14 January 1987) is a Chinese rower who competed for Team China at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics. Zhang gained international notoriety when he failed to show up for the men's single sculls at the 2008 Olympics and was therefore also disqualified from the doubles event in line with international rowing rules. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he only competed in the single sculls, finishing 11th. Andrei Jämsä (born 14 February 1982) is an Estonian rower. Due to a back injury he could not compete in 2007. He is a member of rowing club ''Pärnu Sõudeklubi'' (Pärnu Rowing Club) located in Pärnu. Junior years Jämsä was born in Pärnu. He competed in the U-23 world Regatta in the double sculls event in 2002 with Igor Kuzmin, earning 7th position and in 2003 with Oleg Vinogradov earning 4th position.
