Rowing Ireland
Rowing Ireland, formerly the Irish Amateur Rowing Union, is the governing body of rowing for Ireland. It is a cross-border organisation administering the sport in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Rowing Ireland is a member of the Olympic Council of Ireland and the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron (FISA). Membership Over 100 clubs are affiliated to Rowing Ireland. These are from across the island and include schools, third level institutions and open clubs. In 2019 Rowing Ireland launched its strategy until 2024. This has four pillars: Supporting clubs, High Performance, Rowing for all and Leading our sport. National Rowing Centre The National Rowing Centre (NRC) in Farran Wood, County Cork is the headquarters of Rowing Ireland and is also the base of the High Performance team. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, often called crew American English, in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using Oar (sport rowing), oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars (called blades in the United Kingdom) are attached to the boat using Rowlock, rowlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower (or oarsman) holds two oars, one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain (rowing), coxswain, called eight (rowing), eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. European Rowing Championships
The European Rowing Championships is an international rowing regatta organised by World Rowing (named FISA until 2020) for European rowing nations, plus Israel, which, though not a member of the European federation, is treated as a European nation for competition purposes. The championships date back to 1893, the year after FISA (the International Rowing Federation) was founded. Over time, the competition grew in status and as it was not restricted to European countries, became regarded as the quasi-world championships. The World Rowing Championships were commenced in 1962 and the last European Championships were held in 1973 as from 1974, the World Championships became an annual event. Aifric Keogh ( ; born 9 July 1992) is an Irish rower. She competed in the women's coxless four event at the 2020 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal. Along with her team-mates, she was named as the Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman for July 2021. Coxless Pair
A coxless pair, abbreviated as a 2- and also known as a straight pair, is a racing shell used in the sport of competitive rowing. It is designed for two rowers, who propel the boat with sweep oars. The crew consists of a pair of rowers, each having one oar, one on the stroke side (rower's right hand side) and one on the bow side (rower's lefthand side). As the name suggests, there is no coxswain (cox) on such a boat, and the two rowers co-ordinate steering and the proper timing of oar strokes between themselves or by means of a steering installation which is operated by foot from one of the rowers. The equivalent boat when it is steered by a cox is referred to as a "coxed pair". Eimear Lambe (; born 11 August 1997) is an Irish rower. She competed in the women's coxless four event at the 2020 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal. Along with her team-mates, she was named as the Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman for July 2021. Lambe was awarded a UCD Ad Astra Elite Athlete Scholarship and graduated from University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Commerce - International (BComm Int) in 2019. Imogen Magner (born 8 July 1998) is an Irish rower. She was selected for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Early life She was a junior tennis player and attended the Elite Tennis Academy in Spain. She was later based in Ely, Cambridgeshire, and started rowing in 2016. Career Magner was initially part of the British rowing development programme but is eligible to compete for Ireland through her paternal grandfather. She made her first Irish appearance in 2023, winning the pair 'B' final at the European Rowing Championships in Bled, with Natalie Long. In May 2024, she was part of the Irish women's coxless four that qualified for the Olympic Games at the Olympic Qualification Event in Lucerne. Natalie Claire Long (born 13 June 1990) is an Irish rower. With Sadhbh O'Connor she competed in the Hambleden Pairs Challenge Cup at the 2019 Henley Royal Regatta. She was an alternate for the Irish team at the 2019 World Rowing Championships. She won a silver medal in the coxless four event at the 2022 European Rowing Championships. Emily Hegarty
Emily Hegarty (born 3 August 1998) is an Irish rower. She competed in the women's coxless four event at the 2020 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal. At the same Olympics, her third cousin Paul O'Donovan also won a gold medal for rowing in the lightweight double sculls. Along with her team-mates, she was named as the Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman for July 2021. Coxless Four
A coxless four, abbreviated as a 4- and also called a straight four, is a racing shell used in the sport of competitive rowing. It is designed for four persons who propel the boat with sweep oars, without a coxswain. The crew consists of four rowers, each having one oar. There are two rowers on the stroke side (rower's right hand side) and two on the bow side (rower's lefthand side). As there is no coxswain, the rudder is controlled by one of the crew, normally with the rudder cable attached to the toe of one of their shoes which can pivot about the ball of the foot, moving the cable left or right. The steersman may row at bow, who has the best vision when looking over their shoulder, or on straighter courses stroke may steer, since they can point the stern of the boat at some landmark at the start of the course.
