Rothschild () is a name derived from the German ''zum rothen Schild'' (with the old spelling "th"), meaning "to the red shield", in reference to the houses where these family members lived or had lived. At the time, houses were designated by signs with different symbols or colors, not numbers. The name ''Rothschild'' in Yiddish means "red coat" (coat as in heraldic coat of arms). Lawrence Lee Rothschild (born March 12, 1954) is an American former professional baseball pitcher, coach, and manager. Rothschild played for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1981 and 1982. He has coached for the Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, and San Diego Padres. He served as the manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1998 through 2001, and most recently served as the pitching coach of the Padres from November 8, 2019 until August 23, 2021. Joseph Arthur Rothschild (April 5, 1931, at Fulda, Germany – January 30, 2000, at New York City) was an American professor of history and political science at Columbia University, specializing in Central European and Eastern European history. Jonathan Rothschild (born 1955) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 41st mayor of Tucson, Arizona from 2011 to 2019. From 2001 to 2011, Rothschild was managing partner at the law firm Mesch Clark Rothschild.
