''Roses in Tyrol'' () is a 1940 German musical comedy film directed by Géza von Bolváry and starring Hans Moser, Marte Harell, and Johannes Heesters. It is based on the 1891 operetta '' The Bird Seller'' by Carl Zeller, which has been turned into several films. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Robert Herlth and Heinrich Weidemann. It was filmed in Prague and Zell am See in the Austrian state of Salzburg. Géza Von Bolváry
Géza von Bolváry (born Géza Gyula Mária Bolváry Zahn, ; 26 December 1897 – 10 August 1961) was a Hungarian actor, screenwriter, and film director, who worked principally in Germany and Austria. Biography Géza von Bolváry was born in Budapest. He attended the Imperial Military Academy in Budapest and subsequently served in the Hungarian army (Honved Hussars). After World War I he left military service with the rank of Royal Hungarian '' Rittmeister''. He then earned his living in the new Hungarian film industry. He began his career around 1920 as an actor in various silent films, but soon changed to the Star-Film company, where he was first active as a director and made his debut as director and screenwriter with ''A Kétarcú asszony''. ' (''The Bird Seller'') is an operetta in three acts by Carl Zeller with a libretto by Moritz West and Ludwig Held based on Victor Varin's and de Biéville's ' (1857). In 1891, Helen Tretbar translated the original German libretto into English and adapted it for performance in America as ''The Tyrolean.'' Performance history ''Der Vogelhandler'' was first performed on 10 January 1891 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna with the celebrated Viennese actor and singer, Alexander Girardi, in the title role. It also played at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London in 1895 and, as ''The Tyrolean,'' at the Casino Theatre (New York City), Casino Theatre in New York in 1891 for 100 performances. Elfriede Datzig (26 July 1922 – 27 January 1946) was an Austrian film actress. Following the Anschluss, Datzig appeared in a number of films made by Wien-Film such as the 1939 comedy '' Anton the Last''.Dassanowsky p.98 She married the actor Albert Hehn. Theo Lingen (; 10 June 1903 – 10 November 1978), born Franz Theodor Schmitz, was a German actor, film director and screenwriter. Gloria Film was a West German film production and distribution company. It was established in 1949 by Ilse Kubaschewski. An earlier, unconnected company of the same name had existed during the silent era in Germany, and had been absorbed into UFA in the 1920s. During the 1930s an Austrian production company also called itself Gloria. The company was set-up by Kubaschewski, a cinema-owner, who had noted that re-releases of Nazi-era films, particularly those made by UFA were easily outgrossing foreign film imports and post-war realist rubble films. Initially her company specialised in acquiring the rights to classic German films, but gradually she began co-funding new films with production companies.
