Rosa 'Princess Of Wales'
''Rosa'' 'Princess of Wales' is a white blend Floribunda rose cultivar. It was bred by Harkness in the United Kingdom and introduced in 1997. Naming The name 'Princess of Wales' was chosen in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales. She received it as a tribute for her 10-year cooperation with the British Lung Foundation. The rose is said to be one of Diana's favourites. After her death, the proceeds from selling the roses in 1998–99 were donated to the British Lung Foundation. Description The nostalgic floribunda is also known as 'Hardinkum'. It has a double bloom form, and a mild to strong fragrance. Floribunda (Latin for "many-flowering") is a modern group of garden roses that was developed by crossing hybrid teas with polyantha roses, the latter being derived from crosses between ''Rosa chinensis'' and '' Rosa multiflora'' (sometimes called ''R. polyantha'').Phillips, R. and Rix, M., ''The Ultimate Guide to Roses'', Macmillan, 2004, p226 The idea was to create roses that bloomed with the polyantha profusion, but with hybrid tea floral beauty and colour range. Harkness Roses (a trading name of R. Harkness & Co. Ltd) are rose breeders based at Hitchin, Hertfordshire in England. The nursery was founded in 1879 in Yorkshire by brothers, John and Robert Harkness. Early varieties include 'Mrs. Harkness', 'Frensham' and 'Ena Harkness'. Jack Harkness, grandson of original co-founder, John Harkness, established the first rose hybridization program at the company in 1962, developing vigorous, healthy roses by hybridizing from wild rose species.
