Rosa 'Peace'
The Peace rose, formally ''Rosa'' 'Peace', synonym Mme A. Meilland, is a well-known and successful garden rose. By 1992, over one hundred million plants of this hybrid tea rose, hybrid tea had been sold. The cultivar has large flowers of a light yellow to cream color, slightly flushed at the petal edges with crimson-pink. It is hardy and vigorous and relatively resistant to disease, making it popular in gardens as well as in the floral trade. It was developed by France, French horticulturist Francis Meilland, in the years 1935 to 1939. When Meilland foresaw the Battle of France, German invasion of France, he sent cuttings to friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States to protect the new rose. It is said that it was sent to the US on the last plane available before the German invasion, where it was safely propagated by the Conard Pyle Co. during the war. A rose is either a woody perennial plant, perennial flowering plant of the genus ''Rosa'' (), in the family Rosaceae (), or the flower it bears. Edward Gurney Hill
Edward Gurney (E. G.) Hill (1847–1933) was a nurseryman and rose breeder from Richmond, Indiana. He and his father, Joseph, established the Hill and Company nursery business in 1881. Hill later joined with his son, Joseph Herbert, to hybridize roses and produced many successful and popular rose varieties. Hill's family nurseries Early years Edward Gurney (E.G.) Royal National Rose Society
The Royal National Rose Society (RNRS) (1876–2017) was a specialist horticultural organization in the United Kingdom dedicated to the cultivation and appreciation of roses. Founded in 1876 as the "National Rose Society", it was the world's oldest plant society. It was a membership organisation, with members drawn from professional and amateur gardeners and horticultural businesses. Originally based in London, the rose society moved its headquarters to Chiswell Green, near St Albans, Hertfordshire in 1959, where it created the Royal National Rose Society Gardens. In 1965, the society changed its name to the "Royal National Rose Society" (RNRS). At the height of its popularity, the RNRS had 100,000 members and its gardens contained 30,000 rose shrubs. Peter Beales
Peter Beales Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, MBE, (22 July 1936 – 26 January 2013) was a British wikt:rosarian, rosarian, author and lecturer. Beales was considered one of the leading experts on Garden roses, roses, especially species and classic roses, preserving many old varieties and introducing 70 new cultivars during his lifetime. He served as the President of the Royal National Rose Society from 2003 until 2005. Speaking of his contribution on BBC news, Alan Titchmarsh said: "It was the old and classic roses that Peter loved best and by growing them and making them available to a wider range of gardeners, he did tremendous work in terms of our rose-growing heritage." Field Marshal Alan Francis Brooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke (23 July 1883 – 17 June 1963), was a senior officer of the British Army.
