Romeo And Juliet (1908 Film)
''Romeo and Juliet'' is a silent film short made in 1908 made by Vitagraph Studios. It was the first American film version of the play. Directed by J. Stuart Blackton, it was filmed at Bethesda Terrace in Manhattan, New York. The film starred Paul Panzer as Romeo and Florence Lawrence as Juliet. According to the Silent Era Company, a complete print of the film survives. Plot summary The 1908 Vitagraph short condenses Shakespeare’s five‑act tragedy into a single reel. The action opens in Renaissance Verona, where the noble houses of Montague and Capulet are locked in a bitter feud. Paul Panzer
Paul Wolfgang Panzerbeiter (November 3, 1872 – August 16, 1958), known professionally as Paul Panzer, was a German-American silent film actor. He appeared in more than 330 films between 1905 and 1952. Biography Panzer was born in Würzburg, Bavaria. His education included studying pharmacy at the University of Würzburg and studying vocal music at the Conservatory of Würzburg. He was a lieutenant in Germany's artillery reserves when he left there. Panzer's early work building sets and painting scenes for a New York City film studio developed his interest in the film industry. He also was involved with live theater, working for Augustin Daly both on stage and as stage manager. Panzer was best known for playing Koerner / Raymond Owen in '' The Perils of Pauline''. Harry Solter
Henry Lewis Solter (November 19, 1873 – March 2, 1920) was an American silent film actor and director. Career Solter began his career as an actor in 1908 with Biograph Studios. That same year he met actress Florence Lawrence while making the film ''Romeo and Juliet'' for Vitagraph Studios and married on August 30 of that year. In 1909, Solter began working for Carl Laemmle's Independent Moving Pictures Co. of America (IMP) as an actor but also as a director. Over the next nine years, he directed 148 silent films. In 1912, Solter and his wife established the Victor Studios in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In 1913, they sold out to Laemmle whose amalgamation of several studios created the colossal Universal Film Manufacturing Co. Solter continued to direct for the new company until 1918 when health problems emerged. William Shea (actor)
William James O' Shea (6 October 1856 – 5 November 1918) was a Scottish-born actor. He was born in Dumfries, Scotland and was brought to the United States when he was one-year old. His father, Thomas Shea, was a civil engineer who fought with David Farragut in the Battle of New Orleans during the American Civil War. Shea got his start acting at the age of 18 in Col. John W. Albaugh's stock company in Albany, New York. During the 1880s, he also became known as an Irish dancer and singer. He was said to be the first real actor Vitagraph ever hired, having appeared over 4,000 roles in more than one hundred films from 1905 to 1918. Shea died of heart disease at his home on November 5, 1918. Obituaries at the time listed Shea as the oldest movie actor in the United States, although most list his age at time of death as 56 years old. Charles Kent (18 June 1853 – 21 May 1923) was a British-American stage actor and silent film actor and director. He appeared in more than 140 films between 1908 and 1923. Gladys Hulette (July 21, 1896 – August 8, 1991) was an American silent film actress from Arcade, New York, United States. Her career began in the early years of silent movies and continued until the mid-1930s. She first performed on stage at the age of three and on screen when she was seven years old. Hulette was also a talented artist. Her mother was an opera star. Child actress Hulette was among the principal players in ''Sappho and Phaon'' which had its first performance in Providence, Rhode Island on October 4, 1907.
