It crops out in the Argentinian provinces of Río Negro Province, Río Negro, Neuquén Province, Neuquén, La Pampa Province, La Pampa, and Mendoza Province, Mendoza. Its deposition is Diachronism, diachronous, beginning during the Maastrichtian in the north of its distribution, and later moving to the south, where its strata reached the Late Danian. It lies transitionally above the Jagüel Formation, and the top of the formation is marked by a regional unconformity due to an Eocene and Oligocene Orogeny, orogenic pulse. The Roca Formation (or Roca Shale) is an early Permian geologic formation (Wolfcampian) with its exposure running north and south through Kansas and extending into Nebraska and Oklahoma, notably comprising varicolored black, brown, gray, green, red, and blue shales, mudstones, and limestone, some of which representing Permian paleosols.
