The 1971 PGA Tour season was from January 7 to December 12. The season consisted of 44 official money events. Lee Trevino won the most tournaments, six, and there were 10 first-time winners. Trevino won two majors, the U.S. Open and The Open Championship, in a span of three weeks. In between, he also won the Canadian Open to become the first to win all three in the same season. Jim Wiechers
James Lawrence Wiechers (August 7, 1944 – October 15, 2018) was an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1960s and 1970s. Early life Wiechers was born in Oakland, California. He won the 1962 U.S. Junior Amateur while in high school. Amateur career He then attended Santa Clara University and was a member of the golf team, winning first-team All-American honors in 1965. He collected many honors during his amateur career including ''Golf Digests Number One U.S. Amateur award in 1966. Professional career Wiechers turned professional and joined the PGA Tour in 1966. He played on the PGA Tour from 1966 to 1979. His best years were in the late 1960s through the mid-1970s when he finished on the top-60 money list five times. Bob Goalby
Robert George Goalby (March 14, 1929 – January 19, 2022) was an American professional golfer. He won the Masters Tournament in 1968, after Roberto De Vicenzo notably made an error on his scorecard. It was Goalby's lone major championship among 11 Tour wins achieved between 1958 and 1971. Early life Goalby was born in Belleville, Illinois on March 14, 1929. There he was raised, and lived for much of his life. The 1969 PGA Tour season was played from January 9 to December 7. The season consisted of 49 official money events. Billy Casper, Raymond Floyd, Dave Hill, and Jack Nicklaus won the most tournaments, three each, and there were 14 first-time winners. Frank Beard was the leading money winner with earnings of $164,707. Orville Moody was voted the PGA Player of the Year and Dave Hill won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average. This is generally regarded as the first season of an independent PGA Tour. The tour began to break off from the PGA of America in August 1968. George Archer
George William Archer (October 1, 1939 – September 25, 2005) was an American professional golfer who won 13 events on the PGA Tour, including one major championship, the Masters in 1969. Early years Born in San Francisco, California, Archer was raised just south in San Mateo. He grew to tall, and as a boy he dreamed of a basketball career, but took up golf at San Mateo High School after working as a caddy at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club near his home. He was kicked off the high school basketball team because he missed too many practices due to golf. Tour career Archer turned professional in 1964 and claimed the first of 13 victories on the PGA Tour at the Lucky International Open the following year.
