Robert Sutton, 1st Baron Lexinton
Robert Sutton, 1st Baron Lexinton (21 December 159413 October 1668) was a Royalist MP in 1625 and 1640. Biography In 1624 he was elected Knight of the Shire (MP) for Nottinghamshire (UK Parliament constituency), Nottinghamshire and re-elected in April and November 1640. He was disabled as a Royalist from sitting in 1643. He served Charles I of England during the English Civil War, making great monetary sacrifices for the royal cause. He was commissioned as Colonel (United Kingdom), Colonel of a regiment of Nottinghamshire Trained Bands defending Newark-on-Trent. In 1645 the king created him Baron Lexinton, this being a variant of the name of the Nottinghamshire village of Laxton, Nottinghamshire, Laxton. His estate suffered during the time of the Commonwealth of England, Commonwealth, but some money was returned to him by Charles II of England. He commissioned the building of the first Kelham Hall. Robert Sutton, 2nd Baron Lexington PC (6 January 166219 September 1723) was an English diplomat. Family He was the son of Robert Sutton, 1st Baron Lexington and his third wife Mary St. Leger. Sir Robert Sutton (167113 August 1746) was an English diplomat and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1722 to 1741. Early life Sutton was the elder son of Robert Sutton of Averham, Nottinghamshire, and his wife, Katherine, the daughter of the Revd William Sherborne of Pembridge, Herefordshire. He was great-nephew of the 1st Baron Lexinton. He was admitted to Trinity College, Oxford in 1688 and went on to the Middle Temple in 1691. Diplomat Sutton was ordained a deacon and became chaplain to his cousin Robert Sutton, 2nd Baron Lexinton, English Envoy in Vienna in 1694. In 1697, he was appointed as secretary to the British legation there, and upon the departure of his cousin, became the English resident there. Lexinton then secured for him the nomination for English ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople on 5 December 1700, and he arrived in Adrianople on 7 January 1702. Robert Edwin Sutton (born 30 May 1940) is a New Zealand former cricketer. He played 56 first-class matches for Auckland between 1958 and 1974. Sutton was a left-arm fast-medium bowler and tail-end batsman. He was for some years considered a bowler of Test potential, and was selected for teams of young New Zealand players against touring Test teams three times in the 1960s, but was never selected in the Test team. Robert Sutton was an Anglican priest in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was born in 1832 and educated at Eton and at Exeter College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1856 and was Curate of St Botolph's Aldgate then the incumbent of St Leonards, Aston Clinton until 1861. He held further posts at Westhampnett, Slinfold and Pevensey before being appointed Archdeacon of Lewes in 1888.
